Wow... someone actually scored in a soccer match? Amazing.
Last World Cup, a co-worker watched 10 or so games and worked out that there's a 20-1 ratio of dives to goals in international play.
But I'm hoping for South Africa to win it all so they can make an "Invictus 2".

I can't get into watching soccer. I know people always rip on the diving, but it's not what bothers me.
The game is just played so conservatively. It's brutal. It's like watching trapping hockey.
Nobody ever moves, or cuts in, or tries to work a give and go. They just pass the ball back and stand around. They don't push forward or try to break through the defence.
Two things that really kill the flow of the game is allowing teams to pass back to their goalies, and off-sides.
And did they place the microphones in a bee hive?

I'm sure if you watched 10 hockey games, you'd probably have an equal ratio of complaints to the referee and goals.
Or Montreal Canadiens flopping and goals.
And if he watched 10 games of World Cup 2006 and only saw 15 goals, he's lying.
In the opening round, there was an average of 2.4375 goals scored each game. (48 games)
In the round of 16, there was an average of 1.875 goals scored each game. (8 games)
In the quarterfinals, there was an average of 1.5 goals scored each game. (4 games)
In the semifinals, there was an average of 1.5 goals scored each game. (2 games)
In the championship and 3rd place games, there was an average of 3.0 goals scored each game. (2 games)
I think it would have been almost impossible to randomly watch 10 games and only see 15 goals scored.

Did you watch South Africa's counter-attack today?
It was nothing but long passes and break away attempts.
Besides, wait until you watch Argentina, Brazil or Italy play. That'll be full of give-n-gos and nice passing.

Well, I said it was something *like* 300 dives and 15 goals in 10 games. I don't remember what it was. I can search my deleted emails and find it I'm sure.
But even by your numbers, with what seems to be an average of 1.5 - 1.875 goals per game... it would be very likely to see 15 goals in 10 games.
For a 90+ minute game, to see one goal is hardly exciting play to me. Sorry, that's the truth. Never mind I'd guess there are maybe 10-15 actual scoring chances a game even.

Why do people think the only exciting moment of an event is a goal? If you don't know a game, you can never appreciate the moments in between.
A 1-0 game doesn't mean that nothing happened, as much as a 5-4 game doesn't mean the game was any good at all.

you can have a great game of HoN with very few kills, you can play a great TF2 match that ends 2-1 at time limit.

Derfel, tell your co-worker not to quit his day job. I don't even know why you brought this up, yeah there are dives in this game, yeah it sucks. Nobody who likes soccer (mind you, the most popular sport in the world) enjoys watching dives. Also, scoring as many goals as possible in 90 minutes is NOT the point of this game. Please move along, nothing to see here.

Did you watch South Africa's counter-attack today?
It was nothing but long passes and break away attempts.
Yeah, well counter-attack. That's kind of the problem. Nothing happens until a team creates a turn-over and goes on the counter-attack. It's exciting, but very briefly.
That's exactly what the Devils did for years in hockey when they thrived off the trap. They bored every fan to death for most of the game. They had a killer instinct on the counter-attack - with talent like Elias-Arnott-Sykora they were very exciting when they attacked and were even the most offensive team in the league despite being notoriously defensive. But that was only on the counter-attack. They put everyone to sleep the rest of the time.
Like people are saying, the game isn't just about goals. That's not where the excitement comes from, especially if you're involved in a match that's 90 minutes long. So a good counter-attack that comes up every 5 minutes or so really doesn't make for a terribly exciting experience over the long-haul. And that's kind of what is frustrating because, at times, soccer can be pretty exciting.
But given the sports popularity everywhere else in the world, they have no real incentive to force the game to open up a bit like hockey had to do.

i always found soccer a slow possession game thats takes place in the middle of the field where they try draw players out of coverage, than play the ball backwards when they dont have a play forwards
hockey is faster, players change on the fly so players dump the puck in and both teams get possession regularly, unless ur the habs
which country plays like the caps, i will cheer for them
also they should put a shot clock in soccer, or w.e its called in basketball

PERFECT. Exactly my thoughts on the game (except for the Caps comment).
Too often I've watched a game where the ball is never anywhere near any net for about 90% of the game. Often it's booted back or forth over the centre, or worse - someone actually starts to make a move and comes within a foot of an opponent and dives.
Soccer highlights are great. Watching soccer is soul-sucking.
That being said, World Cup is sexy only because it's World Cup. I will go out and watch and drink.

The mistake wasn't the team, but which side of the corner flag the ball crossed the line.
If there are two teams that are easy to tell apart, it's Serbia (all white players) and Ghana (all black players).

Except it wasn't that at all. Cahill wanted to steal the ball away from #10 but didn't expect #7 from the side. You can tell he finds about #7 late and he retracts his feet from hitting him.
A yellow would have been suitable as it was a late hit. A red was unreasonable.

Either way it was a stupid play on his part, putting the opposing player at risk. Red card was deserved even though he did try to pull his leg back.

While Green made a hilarious mistake, he's still a good keeper. It might have been 2-1 for the States, as he made a key save against Altidore, besides other various stops.
Everyone fumbles at one point, no matter how great you are. Remember Beckham's missed shot last World Cup?

I think your missing the point and I assume your talking about Altitore's shot? Not sure how that is a mistake. I know most of you don't follow soccer but England have a history of great keepers followed by a recent history of horrible keepers that are error prone. James who is on their bench is called calamity James. Paul Robinson their previous #1 had this happen to him in Euro 2008 qualifying.

The reason it was a red was because it was a blind tackle from behind.

France has a ton of youth talent. France's problem is they have a manager who doesn't know his ass from his elbow. He leaves players out based on their astrological signs and he should have been sacked 2 years ago. France already announced his replacement but said they'd let him manage during the world cup. So he's basically a lame duck and none of his players respect him.

I have a feeling this win is the worst thing that could happen to them.

How?
Ronaldo was so pining for that goal it was sad to watch. NK didn't have their 10man defense that really slowed Brasil but both games were jokes anyways.

Now I'm looking for a similar result for Italy (very possible) and Portugal (unlikely).

I agree. The problem they had this year is that they didn't have any solid strikers capable of creating their own chances and finishing, and no solid midfielders to make plays. Hell, their defense was atrocious as well.
Anelka sucks balls, Henry is too old and is offside 99% of the time, and everyone else is useless. It seems like Ribery was the only one making an effort, but even he was off his game.
It's a shame Benzema was left off the roster. He's fairly explosive but given how the team performed, I doubt he would have made much of a difference. Also he had a pretty weak season with Real Madrid, which contributed to him being left out.

Portugal (impossible).
They have a 9 goal differential on Ivory Coast.
The combined difference in a Portugal loss to Brazil and an Ivory Coast win over North Korea has to be 9, AND Ivory Coast needs to score at least 6 more goals than Portugal does on Friday for it to work.
So 6-0 win for Ivory Coast, and a 4-1 loss for Portugal, and Portugal would still move on.
That's not happening.

That was pretty glorious. The best part is that hopefully Italians will take their flags off their car, and stop honking their horns all the time. Anyone who is the slightest bit Italian is more annoying during the World Cup than anyone who is a little bit Irish on St. Patrick's Day. I'll have to see if I have an old Slovakia shirt somewhere and put that on for the sole purpose of being a dick to Italians.
The game was actually pretty good from what I saw. I think I started watching around the 60th minute. It was good because both teams needed the win, so they were really pressing on the attack instead of sitting back and waiting for mistakes.
