I'm going to buy a new pc this week. I've really got no choice as my current one won't handle my school lectures without crashing.

So i'm looking at prebuilt systems. Something that will be capable of running what i need as well as allowing me to still play source.

Option 1: $549 Gateway GM5420 Intel Desktop Computer - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz (Dual-Core), 2GB DDR2, 320GB SATA II HDD, DVD?RW Dual-Layer, TV Tuner, Flash Media Reader, Windows Vista Home Premium

It's got a Video card i've never heard of, a GMAX3000. So i'd probably upgrade that.

Option 2: $499 Gateway GT5426EAMD Desktop Computer - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz (Dual-Core), 2GB DDR2, 320GB SATA II HDD, DVD?RW Dual-Layer, Flash Media Reader, Windows Vista Home Premium Geforce 6150

Option 3: $700 Acer Aspire E380 ED401A AMD Desktop PC - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.0GHz, 2GB DDR2, 250GB SATA HDD, DL DVD?RW, ATI Radeon X1650, Gigabit LAN, Flash Reader, English/French Windows Vista Home Premium

Whats my best bet?

Why do you want to go pre-built?

Why do you want to go pre-built?

Because i don't have a clue how to build one. It's also the quickest way to get a pc, as i need one asap.

Why not order the hardware and ask for someone in the community to build it for you. Once you have all the components needed, it wont take you more then an hour/hour and a half to build it. Also I remember when I was working at a computer shop and people came in to order pre-built computers, most of the time we didn't have it on hands, we had to order it and the delay was like 5 days, the same delay if you buy your comp by parts.

it will get the job done and can be upgraded... add tax and 10$ shipping

you have xp already. stick with it for your situation

and all the parts have more than a 1yr warranty

i can do amd also. but that processor is the best buy right now for 200$

I think everyone is with me when I say that we'd hate to see you go with a pre-built machine. The one that Wes is offering in the marketplace thread is a really good deal.

But either way, to answer your question, I would go with option 1 with a video card upgrade.

Agreed, I'd be tempted to buy Wesley's machine if I wasn't completely broke, all the parts are fairly up to date, and it appears that he's offering them at, if not below, cost. $1000 to Wes and you could get Cray, Gooch or any of the local members down there (in theory) to build it and/or show you how to build one for about the cost of a case of beer... not to advocate that 17 year olds should be drinking ;)
