Alright so I have an AMD 64 4000+ (I think) and I'm looking to upgrade to a dual core... I saw this new 'Black Edition' CPU, Athlon 64 X2 6400+ for $250 off Canada Computers but I didn't wanna spend that much (unless its a good price then I might get it) so give me some suggestions on a good valued cpu... I also saw an Athlon 64 X2 5000+ for $130 and was wondering what kind of value that is... I'm looking to get a cpu around $150 so if anyone has any AMD suggestions (I dont want to hear any shit about I should get Intel cause I have a Socket 939 MSI K8N Diamond Plus mobo) let me know...
K thanks

Seems like the X2 5000 sounds about right for what you are looking for.
AMD's next generation of CPU's will be availble very soon, but not sure on the pricing.

S939 X2s are harder and harder to find. Your best bet is to try looking for a 4400+ or Opteron 165 that's S939.
The highest S939 iirc was a 5000+? Anything after is SM2 and is not compatible with your mobo.

it seems like a minor upgrade and spending $130 on something for something like that seems like a waste. It'd be better to play that system into the ground then get a new set up.

I dont know $150 seems like a minor price to pay for what should be a considerable speed/multitasking upgrade.... DS, so were you saying that the 5000+ (which i read also comes in the black box edition, which should make OC'ing it pretty sweet/easy) will work with my mobo but its the best chip i can get for my mobo?

Any CPU will work with your mobo as long as it is a Socket 939 chip. That's what you have to make sure of. S939 has been discontinued since either last or this March (can't remember) so the CPUs that you want aren't always going to be that easy to find. Given that, I do know plenty of people who would probably take a reasonable amount for their S939 CPU.
On another note, unless you run a ton of processes at once like me or multi-task/alt-tab like crazy, going from a regular A64 --> A64 X2 won't mean too much difference; in some cases your fps/smoothness may even go down.

anyone know anywhere to get S939 chips? Im assuming I need a CPU upgrade rather than a vidcard upgrade cause when i play TF2, i get shitty fps, i turn down almost all of the settings and still get the same, if not worse fps.... so right now i have a A64 4000+, any suggestions as to a chip i should upgrade too would be grand

OH and I thought when i bought my board it could support dual core (X2s) so does anyone know if thats true or not... i have an MSI K8N Diamond Plus

Ok, so I've been looking around Ebay and found this...
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Koolance-AMD-FX-60-SLI-7800GTX-Raptor-X-150-GB-HDD_W0QQitemZ270171670116QQihZ017QQcategoryZ140075 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
is this a good deal? the FX60 Dual Cores (S939) are going for over $300 alone and that comp comes with dual vid cards so what do you guys think? worth it?

OH I also found this
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260165104964&ssPageName=STRK:MEBI:IT&ih=016
Can someone tell me if its a good price, i think it'd really help my comps speed if i got it

well it's at $515 now
For $300 you could almost get a new mobo/cpu/ram option. Your x1600 is PCI-E right?
You could get some new
RAM (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18727&vpn=RM12864AA667&manufacture=CRUCIAL%20TECHNOLOGY&promoid=1019) for $26
CPU (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=23694&vpn=BX80557E4400&manufacture=Intel) for $150
MOBO for $100 (lots of choices)
I don't know if this is really an improvement, but it's an option

would those chips improve my gameplay? The 4000+ I'm running right now is at 2.4 ghz so if i get a dual core, I want the ghz to be atleast 2.4 if not more... I dont know much about opterons

What video card do you have again?
I highly doubt it's your CPU holding you back if you're scaling down the settings - most likely it's something else; either RAM or video card most of the time. I have a A64 4000+ paired with a GF6800GT in my secondary comp and it runs CSS & TF2 just fine (hell, mano even played CSS on it :P).

my ram is 4 512 sticks of OCZ Bronze (i think) ddr 400 or whatever it is... and i think one stick is fucked but i ran the memtest and it took forever (i thought it said 4 passes 0 errors but it kept testing so i stopped it lol)

oh and how much for the 180? anyone know what kind of performance difference i'll see... i'm figuring just multitasking enhanced but games will probably play the same?...

I'm not really sure if you can improve your computer that much without spending more cash
Year and a half ago, that would be a killer computer, and CSS hasn't changed much in that time

orange, in all honesty i would save up for a new tower instead of buying upgrades...939 is dead right now, youd have to upgrade your mobo to get a good processor
this is how i see it...
you can get a cheap standard mobo for am2 at around $90, then the amds are gonna drop in price tomorrow, ram is $90 for 2 gigs worth of ddr2 800, and ncix has a deal on right now for the 7900gs xt or some shit for $90 as well
but if you just want to upgrade to dual core you can easily find a 939 x2 3800+

The Price drops are out, I would recommend saving up and getting a new system
You can still save some money by getting an AMD. The 5600 is at $150. It won't (yes we know Orion) be as good as more expensive Intels, but it'll perform better than what you have now.

see I'm in school and on OSAP so I dont really have the cash to drop on a new rig, I was looking for a bit of a speed upgrade (nothing to crazy) just to hold me off until maybe the end of the summer and then look at a new rig then... I've found a few FX-55/57's on Ebay so I'm hoping to get one for around $100-150 (which from other auctions seems like a reasonable price)

in all honesty, stay with what you have. going dual-core might be a downgrade since most games aren't optimized for multi-core processing and work through an OS passthrough to use both cores. you can pick up AM2s for cheaper than 939s simply because everyone wants to upgrade their 939s. just save your money and get a new rig. if you need help building one, i can do a decent rig for as low as a 1000.

Hey agent! Im pretty sure that your system is still ok. Since your socket is still 939 [like me] and your GPU, rams are ok still. I suggest you getting a better CPU. Opteron are really not meant for gaming but check this site out. YOu cant go wrong for FX-55 for only 150. This will still outperform some CPU's especially your GPU isn't still to bad. anyway's here is the link.

I'm not sure why you would get a FX-55 as the 4000+ is essentially a rebadged and locked FX-53...
Just O/C the 4000+ slightly and there's your speed boost. Honestly, the 4000+ is near the top tier of S939 chips - you've only got the 2.6 and 2.8Ghz chips above it. 400Mhz is not going to give you that 'speed boost' that you're looking for.

deathsniper: he has a SINGLE-CORE 4000+ he wants a DUAL-CORE.
i still stand by my suggestion to sit and save. the compy i have can be bought BNIB for about $1000 (got the parts a year ago for about $1500 new) and i'm the FIRST ONE (most of the time) to load into the TF2 servers. choice selections in parts :)

If you care to read his other posts - you'll see his main concern is to raise his fps and up his 'speed' a bit. ;) Considering the last X2 dual core S939 was the FX-60 iirc which is only a 200Mhz speed bump - he doesn't have very many options.
I know his first posts states that he wants a dual-core, but the reasoning behind it is somewhat flawed - getting a X2 is not going to improve his fps much more. Just like going from 2GB RAM --> 4GB RAM will yield a smoother performance, so does going from his 4000+ to a X2. However, his FPS will see a minimal increase at best, if not a decrease due to certain CPU or sync issues if not addressed properly.
The whole point of going towards a FX-55/57 was to address the fps issue as it gives a better chance of yielding a fps increase, but if you've already got the one right below, why not simply o/c it and save the money?
And anyways, I bet I can load onto the server faster ;)

that's speed PER core though. but like i said, without programs coded with MESI (the protocol that handles multi-core processing) it goes thru an OS passthru and you lose a huge chuck of proc power.
you are right tho in that the increase will be minimal. if he's insistent on boosting FPS, you can kill 2 birds with one stone - upgrade the video card. when you get your new rig, you can move it over and save the dough there.
