View Full Version : Do you think we should get another server?

Hey guys,

There have already been threads about this in the founding members section and the server admin section but I would like to hear what you all have to say about it.

We're thinking about getting another server similar to our current one to support more servers for us. There would be an initial cost of about $1500 and an additional monthly cost of $100.

If you think that we should get it and if you think that you could possibly help us reach our goal, please post or PM how much you would be willing to contribute so we can see if this is even feasible.

Thanks guys!

So far people said they would commit: $650

Since it seems we've already staked a claim on the Toronto TF2 market it seems like it would be a good idea to bridge the gap fron NR CSS to NR Gaming or NR Source. Extra hardware would help with that and you can expect to find regular donations from myself (employment, woot woot) to help support a larger community.

Thanks Andrew!
Our TF2 server is #1 in Toronto and #2 in Canada right now

Here you are Sir Chris: http://www.game-monitor.com/GameServer/204.15.192.52:27015/Toronto__NorthernResistance.com_TF2_1.html

[ADD-ON] Upon further investigation, we could be first if I changed one of the servers files to support 32 players.

I would definetly contribute $20 if I knew the servers would run either Intel conroe, or AMD barcelona CPU's.

Ummmmm, sorry Blitz, but could you please explain the relevance ?

Both servers will be running on Opteron 275's.

Edited for Truth:

Both servers will be running on Opteron 275's, but currently run Intel Pentium 166's.

Nobody is safe!

Yes, because then we can say, "Lets not go to that TNR server, lets go to the good one."

I will donate $100 to the server build, then another $10 on top of my $15 for the monthly bills.

I think you mean Intel Kentsfield.

Hey Skull. I am just making sure that you/we/us would be getting the best value for our dollar.

The Intel conroe CPU's were the only way to go, but now AMD released the barcelona chips, which are also very good.

Basically better performance, more efficient, and better value.

Manophat:

I don't know my AMD too well. Are opteron 275 on the new barcelona architecture?

ORION: No I don't mean Kentsfield. That is the quad core architecture. The dual-core conroe architecture will suffice.

Scott,

The server that we're getting costs $1500. That includes taxes, software required, and additional parts, shipping, EVERYTHING!. It has 4GB of RAM, 4 cores that run at 2.2GHz each, 2 80GB HDDs. It's an IBM eServer 326m (http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/xseries/tours/e326/index.html)

If you can find something that runs on the newer architecture that's around this price and fits into 1U then I'll kiss you ;)

why do we need another server? What would it run?

Good question.
Our current server is starting to max out. Each TF2 pub requires a core.
We're thinking about setting up 2 CS pubs and 2 32-man TF2 pubs for a total of 4 public servers and we'll also have 4 private servers.

Barcelona's are Over-Priced Quad core Server CPU's (Starting at $247 with note ably lower performance then base-line Intel CPU's)
Italy's are AMD Dual-Core Server CPU's Starting around $217 (Same deal)
Dempsey's are Intel Dual-Core server CPU's Starting around $199
Kentsfield's are Intel Quad-Core Server and Desktop CPU's starting at about $265

Pimp!

I will try!!!!!

It seems that barcelona is only quad core, and thus a little pricey.

But I can garauntee I can find a far superior conroe based server for the same price. I will try at least, but I am not big on servers.
