Hey guys!

This is sort of a follow-up to the thread about adding another server. I have some experience at running servers for a few MMORPGs and was wondering if you guys would think it'd be cool to get a WoW server running or possibly some other MMO server. I have quite a bit of experience at running WoW and Ragnarok Online servers and could definitely get something organized pretty easily.

Now, I know some people are gonna sit there after reading this and say: "Wow?! GAY! DONT DO IT!" or "RO " " "", but this is something that could greatly help the income of the server. For example; On either type of server, we could setup a donation system to get select premium items to use on the server or even levelups. Alot of private WoW servers sell full Tier 6 gear along with level 70 and a nice weapon for 50$ U.S. rather frequently.

Another option would be a different MMO or game somebody may be interested in. If you guys would potentially like to see some other games hosted on here that could help the income of the Northern Resistance, cast your votes in here! Nominate games even if you wish!

Note: This isn't for sure going to happen. Further discussion with TNR's Leader(s) will be required to avoid any possible issues with this.

A fast, stable and up-to-date antrix wow server is always one to pull lots of traffic.

I had one running before, I managed to get about 100 account sign ups within the first month. I know how to promote the servers pretty easily.

Oh and, as for Antrix, it's actually been moved to a new project name. That would be Ascent. IT works WAY better now. IT's pretty much just like MaNGOS with 2k player support.

I'm probably gonna start running a server off my computer again to get used to the new emulator. I have everything setup right now, only thing I need to do is setup a website for account signups. Send me a PM if you're interested in having an account setup for you and I'll hook you up with the connection info too.

*EDIT*

I have a server up and running with website functioning right now if anyone wants to try it out. To play, you'll need to download the WoW and Burning Crusade clients and patch them up to 2.2.0, then make your realmlist.wtf read: set realmlist mindwow.kicks-ass.net

You'll also be able to create an account at http://mindwow.kicks-ass.net

Enjoy!

well you all have to remember, private servers are not WoW, they are replications of WoW. half the quests dont work, and most of the bosses dont work. so I dont see much of a point in a private server. allthough, if you can get all the bosses working Mind, I would gladly play there abit myself even (even though I have some time on my actual WoW account, mainly cuz I got sick of pwning the bosses of like BT solo not even wearing tier 6)

Most of the stuff is working right as of now. I've played around with the quests and such and I'm surprised at how far they're gotten since I last played on a private server. They're actually working quite nicely.

It's always worth a try and it's not like they don't constantly work on it on a daily basis. Updates come out daily to patch the little bugs and they're getting very close to the official servers.

... actually, this sounds somewhat interesting to play around with. What kind've rates and level caps would you be implementing? And I hope I don't have to warn you about the whole monetary thing. Can't be anything but donations, or I do believe you can get in trouble with the piggies.

yeah, most of us have been there and back again with "donations" and the EULA. If I don't find myself in T.dot this weekend then Sat I'll set myself back up on WoW. Also rates last I checked with mike was 5x5x5x with normal caps and gear. I think if anything the gimmick for this server is going to be NR style up-time and consistency, something you don't get out of servers with custom content coming out the ass where they have to reset the server ever 20 minutes.

Was about to ask for a level cap increase up to about 10 more, and then realized that it could possibly take some've the fun out've instances/raids. Yar.

If you need anyone to test the server out, just PM me or some such. I've got the discs laying around, but I might not otherwise bother installing it until there's enough people to actually instance/raid.

edit:: And a note to those of you that may fail to notice this little tidbit: Once you've patched to 2.2.0 (which should be the first, and only patch that the launcher will get you to install, after having installed burning crusade), be absolutely sure to use the WoW.exe itself to load the game. If you use the launcher -- which is what the desktop shortcut links to -- it will attempt to patch you past 2.2.0, and that would be bad. Either go into your WoW's base directory and make a shortcut of it, or edit the one already on your desktop.

Hopefully this might save some people a headache.

Actually, I can't get in trouble for this. See, thing is, it's 100% compiled by programmers from scrap. There's no stolen content from the game itself. The emulator is compiled by professional programmers and the database is as well.

As for the rates, they're all set at 5x the Blizzard rates. Not too slow and not too fast, should be okay for now.

I might check it out in january if you still have it up mind, unless you wana sweeten the deal (I have been a head admin on a private server before, so I know all the commands pretty much off by heart... just so you know. and yes I mean Antrax commands. I also know most of the Mangos server commands, even though I was not an admin on mangos)

Well, I had been playing for a little while without much incident, but since you took it down, I've been getting an authentication error: "Unable to validate game version." If you're still in the process of messing with the system, could you give me a little heads up so I don't bother trying to play? :P

you sure it doesn't support past 2.2.0?

Mike, any chance you get send me the DB? I got a HDD for my server and if you want I can host it 24/7 on Ubuntu LAMP (with or without a GUI, and setup remote desktop-ing (does not require a GUI) for keeping everything up to date)

I know I'm fairly new here, but I have had some experience with administering communities and servers. IMO, money might be better spent on expanding the community to other regions - vancouver/seattle to service the NorthWest for example. There are a ton of private servers already - and ironically, there are quite a few in Toronto because it's harder for companies to pursue private server operators. Not to mention it's a saturated market to pursue these options. Google for the top 100 lists and you can easily find one. And if you do, you'll see that the lower 50 are run out of the operator's pocket.

That's my 2 cents.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF A VANCOUVER SERVER!>!>?!?!?

Thats a brilliant idea! It is Northern Resistance and this IS still Canada.... why not expand to a greater audience ???

Also :: "Wow?! GAY! DONT DO IT!" or "RO " " ""

The WoW thing isn't so much a market expansion as it is (atm) Mike, and to an extent myself, experimenting with the ascent core and WoW private servers in general, If we get something fun and stable then promoting it might be an idea, but I don't think its a big concern right now. As for Vancouver, Wise is the only member out that far, save for Gellin in Alberta, It wouldn't be a terrible idea, but we lack a solid foundation in NRwest that we have here at NReast.

The founding members have actually talked about this before around 4 or 5 months ago. I think the reason why we ditched the idea is because people get acceptable latency from our Toronto location usually regardless of their location within Canada. Also because it would take a while before it would start paying for itself.

I was talking to one of our previous ISP's and they plan on opening a data center in Vancouver. Don't quote me on this but I think it's actually an option for me to get an IP that you would usually find out West and attach it to a server in Toronto and it would provide them with better routing.

So we could be hosting a server in Toronto but cater to those in Vancouver. I'll look into it further.

As for the WoW thing, I've thought a lot about it and I think that it would be best if we catered to FPS for now.

Yeah, there are still a few bugs we need to work out before we really go around requesting hardware or bandwidth support, I have that dedicated server sitting next to me that I've offered as a Dev platform w/ Linux and between that and Mike's PC I don't see any reason why we can't get a beta server running just to get everything running smooth.

If you can get the routing right...it might make for some interesting times. I have a ton of buddies out west who...well, don't always like the lag the TO servers give them :)

I used to own two servers in Van but...routing was horrible :|

Seattle is prolly the better choice out west :P The company I use is talking about opening up a new center in seattle and they rent out servers for a pretty decent price. But if west is a little too far for now, why not try central, like Denver. I know, it's in the US, but it's probably the most north central location anywhere on the continent (the prairies have shitty pipes and Chicago's a little... might as well be Toronto :P). That way, it can serve as a stepping stone to hit up west. I for one would play on a central server, since I have a few friends from out west.

I think keeping things 1) Pwned, not rented is fairly important to this comunity, or at least to our administrators. and 2) Canadian. Being a Canadian community is a huge source of pride around here, and to move our servers south of the border would cut away at a big part of what made TNR great to begin with. Like mano said, getting fewer hops between TO and Cent/West should be an easier alternative to a new server atm, but I'm pretty sure that if TNR expanded out west physically (hardware), that Van/Cal/Ed would probably be the location of choice.
