Fixed and it is indeed a great day for Canada.

They were going to try and keep Portage and Main open because of emergency vehicle access... but from what I hear there are already hundreds of people wandering around that area waiting for the announcement so they can walk into the busiest intersection in the city and par-tay. I plan on streaming the announcement live in my classroom at 11.

TSN is saying that True North doesn't particularly want to name the team the Jets. It was a losing franchise with a bad history and they want to get away from that. Also, with merchandising any Jets fan would have to buy all new jerseys/hats/sweaters. But the overwhelming public opinion seems to be they want the 'Jets' back.

For the first year, since it's too late in terms of scheduling, the Winnipeg team will be stuck in the southeast division with Washington, Florida, Tampa Bay, and Carolina. So with all the divisional games teams have to play they'll be doing a ton of travelling over the next season. Calling them the 'Jets' would be fitting.

It has little to do with that - the man was acting like a petulant child today, and earlier.

If they had made the deal with True North last year for the Coyotes, the league wouldn't have had to pay $20million-plus in losses. That's simple fact, there.

Winnipeg deserved to lose the team in 1995, that's pretty clear. But they could have had a team 3 years ago and could have turned healthy revenues by now.

The expansion to the south has been a disaster, and the league will suffer a few more years because of it.

gOOCH has a bit of a point. It's a pretty big disaster for the league to have to tuck their tail between their legs and return to Winnipeg. Atlanta is something like the 9th largest market in the US. So it's not a big win for Bettman to have a team returning to Winnipeg. That's not to take away from Winnipeg. They'll have great fans, but it's obviously better for the NHL to expand in the major markets in the US.

I'd be pissed if I was Bettman. Look at teams like Tampa, San Jose, Dallas, and Carolina. Hockey can succeed in the south. Maybe Atlanta is just a shitty sports town (I think the Hawks have middling attendance). But it was really the fault of the Atlanta ownership fucking the dog on the team. All indications are they didn't promote the team at all. They had two of the most dynamic young players in the NHL with Kovalchuk and (pre-murdering Dan Synder) Danny Heatley. They even had Hossa too. And they were surrounded with utter shit and never made the play-offs.

The same thing is sort of happening with Phoenix. Never a particularly successful team for over 10 years. The problem is when they're moving to these new markets and you have a bad product on the ice it's tough to bring in fans. Dropping the Nordiques into Colorado and winning the Cup right away makes it pretty easy to build a fan-base. Having a loser year after year doesn't draw a lot of excitement.

There's always a group of die-hards, but for the most part fans kind of suck. They show up for winners. Look at Pittsburgh. They were a champion in the early 90s, had the two best players of our generation and as soon as Lemieux retired, even with Jagr still there the fans stopped showing up and the team went bankrupt. Then Jagr left and things got worse and nobody showed up to the games. If they didn't win the draft lottery with Crosby they might be gone now too. But now they have Crosby and Malkin, won a Stanley Cup, have a contender for a couple years in a row and they're selling out the building every night.

I think the biggest point Derfel is making is Bettman has always been against getting NHL teams in Canada. Most recently, he fought hard against the hamilton team even though, the possibility of fans is huge with the people that dont want to spend so much money on leaf tickets.

I do agree that canada isnt that great of a market compared to the states. Especially living in ottawa where win or lose the sens dont really sell out. We've passed through a few baseball teams that dont sell seats, a football team with the same story and now they are in talks for soccer and/or football. Ottawa isnt much of a sports city.

I also dont agree with the conditions that are imposed on the fans. Its like forcing them to watch the games. Anywhere else they wouldnt have the same restrictions. But then again, the big cities in Canada are more spaced out compared to the states. Here, an hour drive doesnt take you anywhere. States have more AOE (lol) compared to canada.

All in all, hope for a good success in winnipeg. All the best. Being the atlanta team but in winnipeg, i cant say i'll watch them often cause i never enjoyed their pace on the ice.

Well, the thing is that expanding in the US is potentially a lot more lucrative. It's not like the guy hates Canadians or something. I think the big thing is the TV deals. ESPN dropped the NHL years ago. Now they're on a second-rate former outdoor fishing channel sports network with VS. And they have a shitty deal with NBC for a few nationally televised games a year and they only cover the final 5 games of the Cup final. They need more national US coverage if they want these TV deals. Right now the NHL is a niche sport in the US. It's less popular than NASCAR. So losing one of the biggest markets in the US is a pretty big blow for that.

Derfel

Its his job to make the nhl grow, he made the risk of expanding south, many of these teams had success and developed fan bases, some had consistent failure
Overall the expansion to the south has been a success, since he already has teams in these markets, elongating the time they are there will develop the fan base and possibly increase the chance that the team will be competitive. The coyotes heated up the last couple years, i think they were 1st in the west 2 seasons ago so he wanted to keep them there for if they do win anything, the venture could pay off big

completely disagree with "expansion to the south has been a disaster", carolina, tampa, dallas, california were non hockey markets at one point, its mostly dependent on team success

no one said this, all im saying is there is potential for more revenue in the future, especially when pheonix is a good team and nfl/nba could have lock outs

It kind of sucked that the news leaked before the draft pick. But I liked the way they just kind of mentioned Jets nonchalantly while they were up there.

Did you notice the song they played right before the Winnipeg pick?

Kind of awful.

Kind of wrong!

The logo using the jet looks great. It's obvious what it is, and the little notch above the nose of the jet is for the "True North" group that brought them to Winnipeg.

The blue circle and red maple leaf piece is a reference to the Canadian Air Force logo (post 1968):

http://www.canadiandesignresource.ca/officialgallery/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/CanadianAirforce.jpg

The one with the wings is obviously a reference to the wings that pilots get.

The name-only logo is the only one that is slightly bleh (because it does look too much like the Toronto Blue Jays), but then it's just a damn name.

The circle-leaf-jet logo is going to sell like crazy on hats.

I know what it's supposed to represent.

Still doesn't stop it form looking like a cheap logo they put on those air patches they give away to little kids at second rate air show.

No offense, but fuck off. The logo looks great. Classy. Classic. Respectful of the military. Patriotic.

Sorry - somewhat drunk in an airport when I posted that. But I still think it's a great, understated logo. Humble but proud, you know?

Exactly. A logo is a symbol - the whole point is for it to "stand for" something.

It's great.

It's not trying to be flashy, which it's the most important thing about a logo nowadays. It's not the 90s anymore...

I haven't given the series much attention in years, but does EA still completely ignore the PC for NHL games?
