Finally, just signing up for promotional emails from the big 5 (Enterprise, Budget, Alamo, National and Hertz) will get you promo deals. Just set up a filter and they'll sit in a folder until you need them. As always, shop and compare. I've seldom paid more than $15/day for a rental using this strategy.

You absolutely want to pay for your rental with a credit card that offers insurance, as purchasing a protection plan from the car agency can easily cost twice the per diem rental fees. Ensure that you sign the CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and thoroughly inspect the vehicle before leaving the lot. In the event of a incident, the credit card you used will be billed for the repair cost and the car agency will provide you with a statement that needs to be forwarded to your credit card's insurer. My experience with the claim process was rather painless.

Try and find third party insurance if possible - the rental car policies are expensive, and don't usually cover very much in terms of liability. We in Manitoba have great public insurance - I pay like $4 a day for rental insurance.
