View Full Version : TF2 - Love It or Hate It?

Ok, so I've played a few hours on Team Fortress 2, and lean heavily towards the Demoman in game... I find that the designations (Offense/Defense/Support) are very well assigned, because while you might think the Demoman is a great Offensive player, he shines better as a Defense resource.
Anyway, I don't know if I find this game awesome and addictive, or too fast paced and tedious.
I love the cartoon elements in the game, the fact that there are multiple audio tags for each 'battle cry', for example, and the graphics are fantastic. On the other hand, the gameplay seems to be a little bit frenetic, and I seem to get pwned way too much, and never really get to see what hit me.
(I sincerely hate every other class - yet, only when they're on the other team - mainly because I've been fragged by everything.)
So. What's your take on this game? Is it a 'flash in the pan' that everybody's going to leave sooner or later, or is it the best game ever?

Im undecided ... its a bit fun but i get annoyed by the fact theres no radar, no crosshair... and no set damage for each weapon so ya dont know if you were killed by fuke or skill???
some things dont make sense > like the engeneer spends all this time into a fully upgraded turret but yet it can be destroyed in two or 3 hits??? wtf?
If they continue to upgrade and update this game like they do with source... i may just keep playing it now and then...

i have crosshairs...
i dont think there is a need for radar, its not like css where its pretty slow paced and people can come from anywhere. not to mention you have spies, so im not sure how a radar would work with spies.
i think there is set damage, it just takes more or less shots depending who youre going after and if the medic is tagging along. its hard to judge how many hits it takes with say a rocket because odds are you wont hit the person dead on every time, and there is also the super rocket you get every now and again. but if you were to hit a heavy with 2 rockets, hed still be alive, while if you hit a scout with 2 rockets, he turns to mush.
i personally love the game, havent had this much fun in a game since i was in grade 9. lol. can see it being a 'fling' though especially if they dont make more maps for the game. but it is doing a lot better than dods did after the same amount of time, so thats gotta be a good thing (in terms of players).

love the fast paced action, love playing as soldier or medic with the odd time trying my luck as a scout. have yet to figure out how to be a good spy, and cant fucking stand pyro's.

i like it but dont love it
no radar was only annoying when learning maps
the game takes less skill to be good at, i despise people who spam spy
its really only fun to play with people on vent

I personally really enjoy TF2; however, as Chris stated above it is a lot more fun when playing with people that you know eaither on vent or on the same team, because then you can go work together.
To an extent I agree with others about the skill factor as well, I find that there are certain people that apear to be pretty bad, but because they have a medic behind them or because they get a lucky crit you will end up dieing. That however is the game and yes every once in a while you will get gayed, but to say that never happens in css would be a lie.
Overall I greatly enjoy the game as it is a change from css slower pace and allows me to go and play a fast pace game when I feel like it. (which seems to be often) I am someone that does not always enjoy sitting around and being patient, you could almost say that when it comes to games I have a case of A.D.D. Although I say that I find that it does wonders for me if I play for like 30min or so about an hour before a cal match because it lets me get all my pushing and going crazy out of my system.
Long term wise I would say that bassed on how much I enjoyed TFC when I played it untill css came out where the graphics just drew me away, I think that I will be playing TF2 for quite a while. We all come from a history of mainly cs. Those that have played TFC before will know that the game was very big and no there will not be a ton of more maps created. The ones they have now are the core ones however there still are a few more they can update for TF2. I also wish they would allow the server size to increase to 32 players because the more players in the servers means more fun, as it adds to the chaos.

I like it because I tend to die quickly and with CSS I end up sitting around watching every round until I respawn....yawn. I like the fact you can respawn in TF2 within the round. It makes it a little more fast paced for me so I don't get bored.

I love the game. I found VALVe hit it bang on. They obviously put a lot of thought and work into each map and player to make it so you can almost defeat any situation with the proper team. It's wicked stuff

The game has been tested thoroughly so you probably won't see any major changes in gameplay but most definetly you will see more maps soon.
If any of you have played team fortress classic you will know that it is still being played and i played it even before counter-strike was born.
you guys will find this game is here to stay and modding possibilities are endless. the only bad notes are the removal of the concussion grenades. if any of you know what they are from team fortress classic they were the best feature for modding. conc nades were used by the medic and scout to launch yourself to very high distances. and modders made puzzle maps not unlike portal where you could use the conc nades to launch yourself from the start to the end.

I LOVE TF2. Winston said it, Valve got it bang on.
I also think that unorganized play is much more difficult. on TF2 I am actually forced to get my mic out.

I was abit skeptical at first when I saw the cartoony graphics... but I seriously love this game personally. like others, I dont enjoy having to wait for the campers to die or a round to end in order to respawn. Also I find mapping for tf2 ALOT easier then on CSS for 4 reasons 1. mapping on TF2, you dont need to put in alot of cover like in source. 2. mapping in tf2 you dont need to put in as many little details to make it look realistic. 3. in tf2 since is cartoony, the map can be of something totally fictional and no one will bitch that its not realistic enough. 4. since 90% of tf2 is defend and attack for both sides, rather then one side always attacking and one side always defending like source, the maps can be mirrored to make the game even, in terms of difficulty for each team.
also, if you go and do the commentaries, you can hear that they removed the grenades on purpose. so people would be more inclined to work around the classes abilities, rather then throw nades all over the place to win.

Lefty !! WTF man. You post a score from someone else's server.... man, thats low.
Get on the TNR server dude. If it's full, it wont be long before we have our next server online and a few more instances of the game running.
As for TF2.... I hate the Spy position with a passion, unless i'm playing it.

I still don't really know what TF2 is... Haven't seen it, or played it. Maybe I need to go see someone in Ottawa that has the game to see if I should get it.

I live in Ottawa and I have it, it is a sick game, and with this game you can kill winston a couple of times and then he gets this little message saying that I am dominating him. That really gets him going espcially when he is on vent and you can trash talk him at the same time.

I used to play TFC religiously, and Team Fortress prior to that back in the old Quake days. Although my thumb longs every now and then to mash for a grenade, I find the game balance is really well done. The only time I feel it's unfair is when I'm playing for crap and getting owned, but that's natural. Heh.
There were a few non-symmetrical maps that were great for balance, they had same number and style of chokepoints, but done differently enough that it wasn't just a carbon copy of each side. Wonder if I should try mapping for TF2, haven't done in any ages, but it's a game I'd definately have an interest in adding something back to.

It's updating mighty slowly because of my poor internet connection here at home, around 15KB/s rate :(
Luckily we're getting some bigger tubes on monday

I don't like the fast pace of it, but I do really enjoy it. The only class I like so far is the Medic. It makes up for my poor aim (as does the heavy)

Demo + Stickies + Backing away as you fire = Success!
Love it. I am biased though, I was waiting on this baby since the time when it was going to be a realistic game with commanders and support and spys setting up cameras. Every year I would eventually get into a conversation about games and what we're looking forward to and every year I'd say, awww man! TF2 is going to be sweet! And it was. And Lo, I am having fun.

I am current enjoying TF2. It's quite fast pace and very random (thanks crits!). I do share a love hate relationship with the game though. I enjoy playing classes such as spy and engie though they're not always the best, with crits, spam and what not. And I admit I get flustered when lame shit happens (lol soldier anyone). But with all the classes it's a good change, you can go from the one receiving crit rockets to dishing them out with just one spawn. I also like how they force people in roles so you can't win a game by yourself (soldier needs medic, medic needs soldier -- except jakupp of course).
Oh geez I'm trying to think of more stuff that doesn't consist of complaining, ah .. ah gawd I can't -- THANKS DEUCE!

Since I haven't goten a chance to weigh in yet, here goes.
Personally, I find the game both challenging AND frustrating.
Which, from MY perspective = WIN, bang on.
If you're never challenged OR frustrated by a game, it isn't worth play.
I may hate crits when they blow me up, but I love em when the other team faces the wrath.
Hell, even on the critless server, I just enjoy the fact that you really DO have to work as a team, or you're screwwed.
I was never really into css (I know, blasphemy), because I found it was too focused on the merits of ONE player on a team's skill, than a full-on team effort. (yes, that's debatable, but that's MY opinion, so shove it.)
I used to watch a buddy of mine single-handedly pwn the crap out of entire regiments of other players, and for that reason, it never appealed to me.
With TF2, even when you die, you're still laughing your ass off and having fun.
So, I love it, and will continue playing the hell out of it.

Just to annoy SharpShooter I'm going to post in this "not quite dead" thread. :P
I was playing a lot of CS:S before the Orange Box came out and even after I picked it up I didn't get into it right away. Then I found the NR servers.
I love playing this game. I think the classes have been well balanced and I'm glad to see Valve is still working on balance now.

team fortress 2 is pwnage. ferizzle. 5 cans of pwn sauce out of 5.
its a nice change from CS:S. i mean, working as a team is really neat. CS:S is fun too, but i get tired of the whole "whose better at awping" deal. awps bring my tits to a boil.

The game has a really nice charm to it. After hours of sitting on the pub I kinda wonder why I still play because of constant randy crits. But the whole style of the game and some of the over the top hilarious moments really make it up for me. Love the game, waited the 9 long years so im not ready to give it up.
