im sure underking will be posting here if he sees the title, but Im wondering how many people in NR actually play WH 40k.

I am actually thinking of starting a new army (my old ones fell apart from money issues, but I will set up a basic army with what money I get from christmas most likely if enough people here have armies to play against that dont mind coming around toronto to play some friendly games) mabye necron, tau, space marines or tyranids. I have yet to decide what really, allthough with the fact that the tau actually have a commander that doesnt wear a stupid helmet, I am leaning towards the tau, especially with their battle tatics that I have seen. allthough art-wise black templar and Necrons will always be my favourite and I will probably build armies of them too later on if I do tau first.

anyone interested in starting NR 40k friendly gaming? XD

i play the game usually house rules though cause some rules just drive me nuts hah, for 40k i have a couple armies and fantasy i have the wonderful horde of zombies vampire count style.

i just started a tau army not to long ago its working out ok espcially the battlesuits i dont mind the long range combat, move and shoot is always fun. Templar army wouldnt be that bad just cause there cool and called templars hah. I always thought tyranids were awesome art wise cause you can go crazy with the colors yellow purple green pink whatever you want.

Never heard of it. ;)

I just sold my Rifts RPG books a couple of weeks ago... THAT's Real RPG.

Warhammer isn't an RPG, anyhow. It's a strategy game. A rather pointless one, in my mind. Only really appealing to hobbyists that have far too much extra cash to spend buying overpriced toys. *shrug*

I played it a few years ago. Had a 2000 point Imperial Guard army of tanks and waves of infantry...and a smaller 1500 point Ultramarine force. I enjoyed the painting and modelling more than playing the actual game though, since you would always have older guys with ridiculous armies. I won a 1st prize in a local painting contest at Oakville HQ, and made first cuts at Golden Demon 2006 and Conflict 2007.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I sold my Space Marine army on eBay for about 600 bucks.

Dark crusade anyone?
Never really got into the models, but the game wasn't too bad, still working on getting my Eldar strats down, they can be a real pain to master, but I'm told they can rape face if you capitalize on their mobility.

Krythos

dawn of war is not the board game. allthough dark crusade is a fun rts. it does not have the same impact the actual game has in a few areas, for example, the actual game you have troop elite heavy fast and HQ choices, so you can divide up your army with abit of everything and not end up with a 1 type rush and get your ass handed to you. also the actual game, infiltration doesnt make you invisible, just harder to spot from a distance, I have been playing dark crusade and infiltration drives me nuts as tau (they dont ahve any building detectors, so you have to have a pathfinder/vespid swarm made and near the enterances to your bace or they are going to rape you every time) because im standing right on top of an infiltrated unit and I cant attack because my swarm is with my stealth suits and I didnt make any pathfinders.

Dark Crusade makes a good RTS, but its hardly the actual 40k, which in my opinion is a very fun, but overpriced game.

and aftershock, like you, I enjoy painting them alot, its the main reason I brang this up, get an NR 40k community going see what kind of paint jobs others have, and have a few fun battles (I prefer base rules, since they are fully balanced). the game itsself for those of you who have not played is very overpriced if you think material wise, but art wise (for the most part) and gameplay wise, 40k is almost worth the money. and besides, yes you are going to spend about 600-700 dollars on the army, but if you paint it up nicely, you can just sell it for that money back when your done like aftershock did.

Crayola

dave, get more money and we can start that armoured company

Krythos
11-18-2007, 05:46 PM
oh and aftershock, you do know most base rules say the points in a team should be even on fun play? so even if they have a 3-4k pt army, they have to use 1.5k if thats what your playing XD

so the only way those insane armies really beat people who have armies is if they are like me, and have only troops.

so for those of you who have not played before, heres my suggestion. start with the bare nessessities, then put in a heavy and elite choice first before more troops, so you dont end up cannon fodder to their heavy choices.

If anyone wants to play any of the WH40K games online let me know :D

I also have a 3000 point Dark Elf army, 1700 point Dark Eldar, and 2000 point Space Wolf army. Now if only I could find them...haha. Maybe next summer or something :)

Krythos
11-18-2007, 07:07 PM
hahah. if we get enough people going, I will definitly atleast get back into building an army, and ill work on a battle area or two (I have perfect sized corrigated peices for it.)

also, your welcome to look me up on dark crusade online, I play under the name of Vaelus (my tau army name online is Vael'us. har har eh? XD)

and if we can get enough people, we can start 40k tournies when the LANs happen (and would attract those of us who DONT want to lug computers around to have something to do to pass the time XD)

ChikenKannon
11-18-2007, 07:34 PM
Mmh... The games take too long so you might as well just have a LAN party or a 40k party.

Krythos
11-18-2007, 08:19 PM
kannon. the idea is that for those of us who dont want to bring our computers to a party, some people sit and play source and tf2 and the likes while some (like me who does not want to bring the computer around but still wants to attend) would sit down to a few games of 40k. also the games dont run for long if you set them a certain way, (or if you have tau who shoot across the map the whole game XD)

trust me, games that arnt useing 3k+ armies usually dont take long atall, depending on the size of the play field, the size of the army, and the objectives.

I've got a 2000 point tau army I've just started assembling. I've played a couple games but only with my friends orks/necrons. Our first game was 1000 points, and with both of us being noobs it only took around 2 hours. Since then the time has come down a good bit.

Although krythos I think my tau, which are very tank heavy would be a bigger hassle to move around than my comp lol.

On another note, i seem to be the luckiest 40k buyer there is : first time i walk into games workshop -bought the books and some paint & got a free skyray
hop on ebay - tau megaforce +unpainted forgeworld commander $175 with shipping.
2nd time @ gw -bought a devilfish, got a 2nd free.

Krythos
11-18-2007, 11:01 PM
hahaha. but underking, would you be willing to meet up and play a few games? also, Im thinking those army travel kits they sell (or you can make your own if you have the foam) which makes the armies VERY easy to move around.

It depends when/where. Assuming its feasible for me to do, then sure.

Krythos
11-19-2007, 08:04 AM
well probably in toronto, and probably close to the subway lines since I dont have a car myself. right now where Id probably buy my army aside from games workshop is a store just off of dundas west station called dueling grounds. if I have a few friends over for 40k here, its not bad either, because I live 10 miniutes bus ride from a subway line, allthough that wont happen till I start my army XD

I never tried either Warhammer tabletop, though I've been watching them being played most of my life. I just never had the money (or the painting skills) to keep up with the miniatures. After spending all my money on the AD&D core sets, the Mechwarrior tabletop sets, all the different Pallidium books, the MERP's books, the GURPS books...whatever else was in print back then, well, I didn't have anything left over to spend on the cool looking armies.

I used to run a roleplaying club back in the Quinte area, called the QR² (Quinte Regional Roleplayers) back in the day. Before M:tG killed the pen and paper crowd. It was a hoot, playing with some of the crazy guys back then (ever play an elf who's scared of the dark?).

I wouldn't mind learning the Warhammer rules, I'm sure they're easy enough. I really loved playing Mechwarrior in what we called "Real Time", which is where we'd just toss the hex maps, whip out some measuring strings and have at it, I'm pretty sure WH and WH:40k are similar.

Krythos
11-19-2007, 08:24 PM
WH and 40k rules are quite different actually. even though the basis is the same.

also, painting is not hard actually, yes, you could think its hard, but all you need is a steady hand a small paintbrush, a big paintbrush, and a spraycan. spray the undercoat, overlay with the big brush the base color, make the trims or armor or whatever you want the other color with the smaller brush, then your all set with a good looking model without much work.

personally, I never over-detail my armies when Ive made them, instead I gave them a very basic look I could go over all of them quickly, the only models I over-detail are my commanders and sometimes my elite's. since they are more of a symbol for the army, then the bulk. so it makes more sense that they would be all prettied up, rather then the army thats probably going to die.

Crayola
11-19-2007, 09:23 PM
WH fantasy rules are so goddamn complicated

Krythos
11-19-2007, 09:41 PM
40k is semi complicated too, if you dont know what all the things mean or have the codex

Krythos
11-20-2007, 12:34 AM
ok, I have decided on the army Im going to build, which will be necrons again, since I still have a few warriors that arnt bad, if I can find the end to my lords staff (it broke off :( ) I can save some money there, also I already have their codex. so underking, our battle will be one to remember when I get a decent point army, tau vs necrons... probably the funnest game I can think of since tau can constantly pick off the army as the necrons move foward to take them out, a destruction game between the two would rule.

and on that note I will also be building a decent playing field for us, if anyone wants to help thats interested in 40k, ill give you my adress in a pm and you can come over to help build after I get the materials

theunderking
11-20-2007, 12:49 AM
Considering I live in windsor most of the year, it could be a while before this epic battle plays out.

I like that you've chosen necrons.. I can get plenty of practice against my buddy here. (evil cackle)

Krythos
11-20-2007, 01:32 AM
yeah, I dont get any pratice in.... yet. like I said though, im going necrons cuz I have the codex, they are one of my top choices (if not my true top choice) and I have a few decent warriors still allthough the gauss rifles look poorly painted over, because of a few mistakes XD. but they are still intact. and if I can find the end to the warscythe I have a good necron lord to command my armies

Krythos
11-20-2007, 03:41 AM
also, underking, dont worry about the big epic battle for a while anyway, im not a very limited budget cuz im not employed, so you can probably guess, Ill be doing everything I can to save money on my necron army when I decide to start buying for it (should be around christmas I start. unless I go get a casino card so I can head to niagara cheap see my GF, do some gambleing before I head home.)

so in regards to the rest of you, I know underking will be up for it whenever he gets to toronto, but how many people are actually willing to, or have 40k armies that live close enough to toronto to actually have a game once a month if that, given that we are all, of coarse, able to hang out and duke it out on those days. because I would like to get a few different opponents that I am actually aquainted with, other then my idoit younger cousin, or my older one. Since the reason alot of people dont play the game aside from the cost, is that they dont know enough people who actually play, from my experience.

Krythos

Perhaps make it a throwdown in april?

I might have an ok army by then.

and DS. dont even have the basics? you dont need to have a full 3k points, ill probably play with a basic squadstart playing from that and add onto it

DeathSniper
11-20-2007, 02:16 PM
I have the pieces. I just want to take the time to paint them all NICELY :p
Base coat or unpainted is not how I like to play :)

I have about 1200->1300 Dark Eldar painted, and about 600 points of Space Wolves

Krythos
11-20-2007, 03:04 PM
hahaha. yeah. I like to have my models actually painted too, but I dont go into detail unless its my HQ or elites, since they are usually more iconic aswell as kickass on a battlefield

Krythos
11-22-2007, 04:07 AM
so people stoped posting here huh? lol

theunderking
11-22-2007, 05:36 AM
Not too much left to add that I can think of. I don't mind fielding unpainted models, on occassion.. but when most of the army is default grey, it really loses a lot of its character.

Like DS I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so even going through my FireWarriors is taking me quite a bit of time.

Krythos
11-22-2007, 05:44 AM
I dont think anyone fields unpainted. I will field after base and main color is done, personally, then add in details when I can.

But I think that paintjobs should only be done perfectly on the big stand alone models or elite choice units your probably only going to have 1 unit of. I would never over do troop choices. lol

Lol that's not what I meant. They would look at my force list and customize their army to beat mine. So when I played IG they would throw out Land Raider Crusaders; when I played Ultramarines they would field an Iron Warriors army with Obliterators and Devastator squads with Plasma Cannons :(

PS Painting is the shit. My whole Ultramarines army was painted GODLY, I'll see if I can get some old pictures up :)

I know I'm making mine a one-size-fits-all army.If it were a tournament for prizes I'd probably power game like aftershock is saying. But for playing casual style:

One Cadre to rule them all, One Cadre to find them,
One Cadre to bring them all and in the greater good bind them! :)

Krythos
11-26-2007, 07:45 PM
lmao. nice one underking. yeah I highly highly doubt we would be doing anything tournament based. (unless we somehow start up a WH 40k community and it grows so big we actually have enough people and a sponsor to host tournies ourselves. nearly impossible unless we start the community XD)

And nice paint job aftershock!

Krythos
11-26-2007, 07:52 PM

Krythos
11-26-2007, 08:00 PM
