Hey guys,
Looks like I need laser eye surgery for my eyes to be good enough to apply with any police force. Just wondering if anyone here has had it done, or knows any friends/relatives who have. If so, could you tell me where they had it done, stuff like that? Thanks.

Can't be a police officer if you have glasses?

Everyone I know got it done at TLC in London. Supposed to be one of the best places around.

Tim, my wife did the same thing. She went to one of the Pioneers in the industry. It is here in Toronto - Dr. Weinstock. I can get you a number if you cant find him but I believe he is on Sheppard Avenue West. She got it done 13 years ago and she still has 20/20 vision. Scores a perfect mark on all gun tests to boot.

20/30 vision for Cala, FTW!
Like most people have asked, why can't glasses be used? Or is this just a choice of your own?

If you can see well enough to drive, that would probably be enough to aim a gun accurately one would think.

my mom did the laser eye surgery. it held for about a year or 2 but then her eyes started to worsen again. she's back to needing glasses just not a very strong prescription any more.

not all people keep 20/20 vision after the surgery, luckly it is only a small fragment of people that lose the 20/20 after surgery, unluckly my mom was 1 of those people.

dont have the slightest clue as to where she got it done but gl with ur hunt.

I was told I had 40/20 vision and that I could see at 40 yards what people could only see at 20, or something like that. Cool.

the issue with that is that it fucks you over up close. or at least it's supposed to, every try looking into a microscope? i hear its shit for farsighted people.

Im far sighted. I have glasses for reading and computer use because the text goes all blurry after a few seconds without them - specially in shitty lighting conditions.

A good friend of mine had it done. As far as i know he's really happy with the results, and I've never seen him need to wear glasses (and he's in front of a computer all day)

Thanks for all the input guys. For those of you who know people who have had it, do you know where they had it done? That's the big thing for me is where to do it, because i want it 20/20 and i want it to last.

For those who are asking why no glasses/contacts for the police:
They require you have 20/40 (or better) combined UNCORRECTED, and CORRECTABLE to 20/20.
However, you have to wear contacts, no glasses. Think about it, a cop comes up to you with glasses, you bust his goggles and he's an easier target. If they have contacts or dont need them, you cant tell which cops do/dont wear them, so you cant use it against them.

Gerry, if you could find that number that'd be great man. Also, do you know what your wife's prescription was before she had it done? or a general idea of how good/bad her eyes were before the surgery?

I had it done 2 yrs ago by Dr. Edmuson in Ottawa. I had a persciption of -8.50 and -.9.25 before the surgury. For all who don't know what that means my glasess (when I wore them) were about the thikness of 4 quarters. They told me ahaid of time that my vision could only be corrected to 20/20 in one eye then 20/40 in the other that is much better than 20/2000. Anyway my advise to you is don't go lasik. I had the operation done because I wanted to become a fireman so I was in the same boat as you and they recomended going with a procedure called PRK long story short no flap.

Timberly
March 18th, 2007, 02:49 PM
is the PRK surgery better for people with really bad prescriptions? I think my most recent prescription was about -5.00 in each eye.

If you ask Fab nicely I think he can give you +5 in each eye and you will be back to normal vision - a little milky, but normal...lol

Wow, im booked in to get laser eye surgery done next week but after tonnes of research theres seems to be lots of talk about class action suits against doctors and even the makers of some of the lasers!

most mistakes ar incorectible, and tonnes off ppl cant see at all at night because of glare and starbursts"

I hear lasers attract bears!

Do you really wanna get raped by a bear?

I wouldn't wanna risk a procedure that's still partially experimental and not yet perfected, but that's my personal thoughts. Just the thought of a potentially blinding light being directed at my eye for several minutes makes me feel uneasy.

Who knows? Maybe I'm just a chicken shit and there's almost a 0% chance of failure now.

I think any procedure has some people react badly, medicine is not an exact science.

My cousin had laser eye surgery a few years ago, his night vision was bad for a few days afterwards, but then returned to normal. He loves it, and considers it money well spent.

I have 3 eye doctors my general one and two specialists. The two specialists are highly respected in the field. All 3 wear glasses or contacts. I don't trust lasers because there still hasn't been enough study of the long term effects. I'm in my mid-20s so if I get it done now and then discover that I'm screwed after 20 or 30 years it would be nasty. So as much as I would love to wake up at night and be able to tell you what time it was without my glasses I'll continue to find them before I discover the truth.

I had the lasik surgery here in Ottawa about a year ago, and overall it was a great experience. Once you get past the mental block of the knowledge that someone is going to be cutting your eye, it's really quite a simple procedure. The day of the surgery there was a lineup in the waiting room, people would go in to the OR, and come back 15 minutes later.... every single was surprised; smiling about how easy it was. It's pretty amazing how little it takes to fix your vision.

The reason I got it done was just because I look terrible in glasses, and got sick of of messing around with contacts day-in and day-out. I had a pretty major astigmatism in both eyes, plus a little bit of near-sightedness, and they told me ahead of time that I was a greater than average risk of regression. But everything worked out and I have 20/20 vision in one eye and 20/30 in the other. And I really have forgotten I ever had to wear contacts.

They always give you the usual warnings like, you may need glasses at some point when you get older ( I was 26 at the time ), if things don't work out well you may not be able to wear contacts again (would be forced to wear glasses) and you may or may not be able to undergo more corrective surgery, some minuscule percentage of people end up with worse vision. etc... But as far as my experience goes, I couldn't be happier with it.

The other major factor is that they're always improving the precision of the lasers, which means if you do it now there may be a chance that you could have had better vision if you waited a few years. And they always offer you different techniques at different costs based on the age of the technology. I would recommend, if you can afford it, going for the best option.

If you have any specific questions about the procedure, recovery, etc, I can do my best to answer them ;)

My good friend Doug had the procedure done, he said it worked very well for him. His father is a doctor and he himself is in med school, so he has a bit of credibility.

I've had 3 friends that have had lasik some in 3 different cities and they've all loved it. Do your research with your optometrist, talk to specialists, but by all means to get rid of those glasses ans see 20/20 like the rest of the world man, do eet!

Lol fab, that train left a long time ago, i think they call it affirmative action lolol.
Anyways, me being a young white male, i'm in the worst position for joining toronto. I'm probably gonna end up in Peel anyways.

However, since you resurrected this thread fabbypants, we've had a number of newer members share experiences and information, so thanks to all who've contributed. Keep it coming if you've got more info.

I know 3 people who had eye surgery. 2 of them were doing well for 2-3 years before problems began. One of them can barely see when it gets dark now and the other guy his losing his eyesight only from one eye. The 3rd guy went back to his home country, Columbia, to have his eye surgery and he's doing fine. Apparently, Columbia his one of the best places in the world to have eye surgery.

My father had coke bottle glasses and had his done about 10 years ago now. It took a lot of adjusting to looking at my dad without glasses on... and now it looks weird when he does have them on.

It is literally an instant fix. He could see within a few seconds of the procedure, of course you're sore and swelled, but it did fix his vision. They under corrected one of his eyes so he would have better far vision, and after a while he began to get headaches so they re-corrected that eye, and eventualyl adjusted the other one again... so I think it's at least 2 operations per eye but each operation went well and he was fine and no longer has to wear huge thick glasses.
