Just redid my water cooling for the third time this week.
It's not as neat as I'd like, since I don't happen to have my dremel tool. Once I get enough parts to justify disassembling the whole thing again, I'll make some cuts so I can route my power and SATA cables more cleanly.

Right now I have it setup for cool and quiet running:

E6700 @ 3.4 GHz (10 x 340 @ 1.33 V/Auto in BIOS)
4 x 1 GB DDR2-680 5-5-5-12 @ 1.90 V
X1900XT @ 675/800 default V (I think 1.40/2.00)
NB Voltage @ 1.55 V (4 sticks of RAM makes it cry, hence the bump)

I've had it at 3.6 GHz @ 1.50 V but my waterblock isn't making great contact because it was designed before Conroes. I'll be selling it and getting a DTek FuZion block instead. Once I fix that, I expect CPU load temps to drop at least 5 C.

Ambient 24 C
CPU/GPU Idle 28/38 C, CPU Load 48 C. No idea what my video card loads at.

Three fans inside the case run at 5 V (orange ones, and the black one in the PSU chamber). The two fans on the rad run at 7 V. The loudest parts are my Seasonic S12-600 PSU and my WD 320 GB SATA hard drive :( Anyone want to buy them so I can get different parts? :)

http://individual.utoronto.ca/bzhou/images/wc-newloop2.jpg
Much much much neater cabling it looks like. I would have taken a picture of the other panel removed, however the girth of the 24 pin cable makes replacing it a 15 minute procedure. Modular is great!

http://individual.utoronto.ca/bzhou/images/wc-newloop2-hdcaddy.jpg
http://individual.utoronto.ca/bzhou/images/wc-newloop2-hdcaddy2.jpg
Because of the girth of the PSU cable, I had to let my hard drive cage stick out a little. Look at the problem it causes with the REGULAR panel! With a well placed simultaneous hold panel+punch+slide closed motion, I can squeeze it by and keep it sealed.

How's $70 for the 320 GB? -> "WD3200JD-00KLB0 In Limited Warranty 10/24/2008?"
Selling my old Seasonic S12-600 as well :) How's about $145.

512MB of RAM is kinda low now, even for a notebook. Plus, low screen refresh rate on monitor screens = eyes bleed over time. 75 Hertz minimum - 60 is the max on all laptops I have seen yet.

Not to mention the painful process of getting replacement parts...

Wesley Crusher
July 18th, 2007, 04:44 PM
Refresh rates on LCDs are not the same as on CRT.

A CRT actually scans the image across the screen every 60 times a second or whatever you set it to. It's like a projector sort of, every second 60 frames flicker on and off.

LCDs have a backlight that illuminates the image, eliminating the "flicker". There is no scanning across the screen. It'd be more like looking through a stained glass window.

Most heat pipes work best if gravity helps the condensate return to the base of the heatsink.

When the heatpipes are mounted in an "n" orientation, it'll get stuck in the end.
If it's mounted in the "U" orientation, then it can more easily return to the base.

I'll post my rig as well.

X-Blade Case (Unknown company, lol) - Used to have an Antec P180, but the thing weighs a ton and my back hated it, so I got rid of it.
ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz - My CPU fan is too shitty to overclock it at the moment
Thermaltake Ruby Orb CPU fan - See? lol
2 x 1 GB OCZ XTC Gold DDR2 PC6400 RAM @ 5-5-5-12
1 x eVGA 7950 GT KO 512 MB Video Card
Creative Labs Soundblaster X-FI Xtreme Audio Sound Card
2 x 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA2 Hard Drive RAID0
1 x 200GB Western Digital Caviar 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
1 x LG 16x DVD Burner
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Razer Diamondback 1600DPI Gaming Mouse - > Logitech G5, G7, Ganything. Don't care what you Logiwhores say!
Acer AL1916W 19" Widescreen 5MS LCD Monitor
Cyber Snipa Aluminum Mouse Pad
Logitech Gaming Headset - I think that's what it's called... It's not so great anymore and hurts the ears after a while...

I'm thinking about getting a new CPU fan to try overclock my baby. Apparently, 4GHz has been achieved on air cooling with a Zalman 9500 CPU fan, so, I'm quite happy I have a processor with THAT kind of potential at low cost.

Upgrading an old machine with the following:

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 - SLA3J - L711A691 - Pack date: 07/20/2007
Motherboard: Asus P5K-VM - 0401 BIOS
RAM: 2x1GB Kingston ValueRAM DDR2-667
Heatsink: Scythe Ninja Rev. B w/Yate Loon SL12

Had to trim the bracket on the Ninja Rev. B to clear the caps. Look at the paste distribution before I modified the bracket.
http://individual.utoronto.ca/bzhou/images/p5k-vm-ninjab.jpg

I've undervolted and overclocked the CPU.
http://individual.utoronto.ca/bzhou/images/e2140-2667-1.2750.JPG

8x333, 1.2750V set in BIOS, 1.168V load according to CPU-Z.
I've hit a wall at 333, and I can't seem to locate any conductive ink to attempt the BSEL mod to increase the default FSB from 200->266->333.

I have it temporarily setup on my desk using a Phantom 500W, Seagate 7200.7 40GB IDE (w/AAM ON).

This is replacing an Athlon 64 3000+/MSI RS482.

CPU: $79
Mobo: $125
RAM: Already had
Heatsink: $35

Awesomely cheap upgrade.

Seems 25% is as high as my CPU will go without memory issues (memory multiplier options in the BIOS are gay) but my temps are stable, Stremes the 6800 core can run stable up to about 99 Celcius, have you looked into over clocking or pipeline modding? both would add alot of performance and are relatively easy to do :) my 6800 runs from about 50C-65C but I have a custom heatsink on it that occupies 2 PCI slots (with fan).

I'm begging to question the "stable" bit, I mean, it runs fine for hours on end, but every now and then I try to do something, open media player, join a server, load a webpage, and poof, restart... the temps are stable, and it's never the same amount of time in, usually 1-3 hours in, but it's getting kind of annoying and I'm questioning whether it's my CPU, Mobo or Harddrive (did a full mem86 on it about 4 hours ago).

Neither system costs nearly that much when you build it yourself... I have access to everything I'd need to do either, or almost everything... I'm thinking of using sulfur dioxide (type 3 freon if I'm not mistaken) for the freon system, and as for oil, some plexiglass, silicone and canola oil really isn't a bank-breaking expense... I've made custom modified all my existing cooling systems, so why not take it up a notch :)

WiseGuy
September 16th, 2007, 06:20 PM
cause if it leeks just a little bit u screw u whole system, where as the performance/price curve is spiking high towards teh end of the graph... it just doesnt seem worth it lol

this will let u get like what... an extra 5% on top of ur current overclock?

ORION
September 16th, 2007, 07:27 PM
Once again, it doesn't seem worth it to anyone who doesn't have experience engineering devices of this nature using the proper tools. It's not about the results as much as it's about the experience of building it and making it work. Also, in either case a leak wouldn't do too much damage, Oil leak: congrats you leaked oil, Freon leak: room smells of sulfur, shut system down and re-assess air-tightness.

Coretemp added to shot, RAM running at DDR2-800 simply because I haven't bothered to tweak anything yet... that'll come maybe this weekend. SuperPI will be pretty crappy since the RAM timings are very loose compared to all of the benchers.

Who the hell buys a QX chip and doesn't OC? Frig... haha. 400x10 @ 1.35-1.40V is a pretty safe spot for 24/7 use. The TRUE120 can handle that no sweat. I'll push on higher and let you know.. this chip is doing better on water+low volts than my QX9650 ES.

"Core" Machine was a Gateway GT5426E - all that remains of that pretty much is the motherboard.

AMD Athlon 5000+ 64 X2 2.6GHz Dual Core

4GB PC5300 DDR2

nVidia 7900 GS 256MB (Could have done better, but the GPU is nice..took a 650w power supply)

2GB Readyboost...why? Because I can? I'm not even sure.. ;)

LG 1933 19" 4:3 Monitor (connected with Monster DVI)

Plantronics Open Ear Headset (340 model I think?)

Total HDD = somewhere around 500GB between the PC & an external MyBook

All this and I get an "overall performance rating" of 5.2 under Vista. I sell $3000 machines for a living that rate not much higher than 3.2-3.5

Oh yeah, I run Vista.

Utility Drive: Seagate SATA-II 7200.10 300G

Yes I use onboard audio, but it's good sound that supports 7.1 surround. My audio limitations are my headphones right now, but I'm not an audiophile anyways, so pfbtbtbtbtbt.

I recently priced the computer - a measly $1200, $750 if you take away 4 HDDs. None of my OCs require anything other than what's provided stock, and considering I'm first in the server 95% of the time, you all need an upgrade :P Good luck trying to find a 3800+ tho, those things OC so well, that enthusiasts have nabbed most of them and AMD stopped production. I'll probably keep this rig for another year and some (depending on new price points), so I'm thinking hard about getting my video upgraded - HD3870X2 maybe.

Got my Q67 up to 3.8 (Air, Thermalright Ultra 120 - Lapped) just before my DFI MB + RAM died. Memory reservation isn't limited to 3.6G, it's limited by the total address space of a 32 bit OS, which is 4GB, but little things like Video Cards and Chipsets are known to alter the visible value.
DDR2 @ 667 for 1:1 ratio?
ever consider RAIDing those drives? 'cause I can't even imagine how you can use that much space...

I currently have:
1 x Hitachi 1 TB
3 x Western Digital 1 TB

Obtained through a few contacts. Best Buy in the states had a ridiculous sale and someone resold one to me for a small fee.

The Hitachi is a great performer - using it as my main OS / app drive. The three WD drives are 5400rpm and are a bit slower at seeking so I use them as my storage drives.

Raptor 150 GB drives aren't the king of transfer rates anymore with the 333 GB platters coming out. If you get a chance, check out the Samsung F1 series for speed and silence. Segate 7200.11 are also very speedy. That being said a Raptor is still a fast drive.

FYI I've had my WD 500GB AAKS drives fail on me when temperatures get too hot whereas my Raptor 150 GB and WD 250GB KS drives kept on chugging along. So far no issues with the 1TB 10EACS.

I dont see Wes saying that anywhere, and if you think they're overrated you're definitly understating their value. As for applications and games they(Raptors/cheetas) blow 7200rpm hdds away. As with this day and age 7200rpm hdds are meerly storage devices, 10k and the soon to come 15k(non SCSI) drives are for optimal application and gaming performance.

That looks pretty decent I must say, but I like my 900 the way it is. You'll be taking out those blue lights right? Or at least adding some yellow film around the LEDs?

I'll eventually swap in green fans. I'm really not one who cares about how his case looks though, as evidenced by the white drives on there until now, so it might take a while.
I just am a lime green freak, which is the reason I did that rather then just paint the drives black.

I was never really a fan of the case but the paint job looks good green :).
Much better than white drives on the black case.

If you can post over 800MHz on your DFI, let me know your clock settings, on my e6600 I just can't get past it @ 3.6 GHz
