View Full Version : Low FPS - Problem?

Current Config:

AMD Opteron 165 Dual Core @ 2.62ghz
Artic Cooling 64 Pro HSF
ASUS A8N32-SLI
2 x 1024mb Corsairs PC3500LL
eVGA 8800GTS 640MB
OCZ Modstream 450watt PSU
WD Raptor 36gig w/ 8mb Cache SATA
Seagate 200gig IDE
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit

Newest Nvidia drivers are installed. Clean of spyware, adware, virus (other than windows itself)

I can't figure it out as CS:S runs between 70-105fps max. This goes with most games. CS:S at high settings vs. low settings makes a difference of maybe 5fps. This also applies to other games. The fps is in that range and doesn't vary much by changing settings. What could the limiting factor be?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! :D

I'd say CPU,... ( for TF2 )

Try this FPS config; right click save target as...

Hmm.. I was hoping you wouldn't say that as it's not a cheap upgrade. I might as well go AM2 Then DDR2. Although they are fairly inexpensive, it's just not an affordable route at this point and time.

It's not really an issue, but I was just trying to figure out why such a low fps as when I was using my 7900GT, I would hold higher FPS at the same settings.

That config sets fps_max to 101 which doesn't help with the cap.

Try doing an fps_max 300, that should allow it to go higher as long as you have Vsync off.

I've set the max at 300 and vsync is disabled.

The thing that boggles me is the decrease from my 7900GT to my 8800GTS

Did you use Vista x64 with your 7900GT as well?

Ooh... Touché !

Perhaps that's it?

Actually, one big concern is your PSU, with an 8800 you should be running a min. 550W, that isn't to say that you can't run less, but you really shouldn't.
CSS Really is a CPU whore, going from a celeron 3.2 to a p4 3.6 to an e2140 3.2 to a q6700 3.6 I jumped from an average 45FPS(max 100) -> 80 FPS(max 300) -> 110 FPS(max 390) -> 800 FPS(max 1200) (8800 GTS 512)

its not a PSU issue. I use the same PSU.

For some odd reason i have pretty much the exact same rigs as u dude, its creepy. Cept my opty is clocked at 2.55, but 2 gig's ram and an 8800, similar mobo, same Powersupply.

The fps your getting is the same as what i get outta my CS:S so i wouldn't be too much concerned. One thing that i found improved performance when i upgraded to the 8800 is setting your texture filtering to 16xAA, its much clearer and adds like 20-30 fps over using bi or trilinear. (must be an optimization on the 8800).

But yea using vista your guaranteed an fps drop. It will hog a bit more resources.

Hahaha. Yes, that's it. If you were running XP before, that is!

Vista is the issue here, hands down. My son had the same issues with his laptop. Use some Windows Vista tweaks and you should see some increases. The is what I used for my sons laptop running Windows Vista:

http://www.pctuneuptips.com/tips/vista_tweaks/?gclid=CMGJy5fY85ACFQwsOAod-heK2g

Also, go into the BIOS and see how much Virtual Memory is allocated. If it was anything like mys sons, it was set to 64MB, which I changed to 128MB.

I also got the program recommended in the attached link to clean up his laptop called RegCure.

Hope some of this helps you.

Phew.. I was wondering. And that is creepy  Have you tried clocking higher? Or didn't bother?

Thanks Skull.. I will give that a try as well.

I'm waiting for DX10 on linux?? :D

That's cool, i'm still waiting for dx9 on linux. It's almost the same thing...

Hardy Heron is looking MIIIIIIGHTY good though.

Ewww I missed where you said you're running Vista. Definately DITCH Vista for FPS increases.

And on another note, do not use FPS_MAX 300. That is rediculous. You don't want your frames jumping up and down all game. You want them to be steady. Cap them. You wont tell the diff between 100FPS and 180FPS anyways.

You want real consistancy? I force 100HZ on my mouse, 100HZ on my monitor, 100FPS and USE VSYNC! It's like glass, very very easy to aim. ( Assuming your PC can hold 100fps in all situations )

Can someone help me with a PSU.

My current PSU is 450W: +3.3V(28A), +5V(45A), +12V(26A)

The one I am looking at is: 750W: +3.3V(24A), +5V(28A), +12V(25A), +12V(28A)

My understanding is that the amperage is most important? Based on my current config, would the 750W be better even though the amperages are lower? Are the 12volt rails the only important ones? Any advice?

Note, most systems can be run on 350 W PSU without breaking a sweat... it's just cheap PSU manufacturers over-rate their units, and real PSU manufacturers sometimes even under-rate them.

Corsair HX520 will be plenty enough. It is manufactured by Seasonic.. modular cables... very quiet.

lol wes, for a second i was like... how can the cables be quiet..!? then i realized im an idiot

You should write up a tutorial on how to do all this, I could stand to learn a bit about optimizing this stuff.

If you are still using Vista and have the graphics problem try these patches.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936710 - SLI patch that makes Vista actually use the second card

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 - Geforce 6,7,8 virtual address space fix

I only applied the second patch (no SLI here) and my fps became very comparable to my xp pro machine. Give it a try.

It's actually not as simple as that Langer, but thanks for trolling.

Edit, about the patch, Crysis made me download it when I installed it.
