So the new condo I'm moving into has ethernet provided by beanfield

http://www.beanfield.com/ethernet_internet_access.html

$79 a month for a 10 meg dedicated fiber optics connection so far as I can tell.

Is this a better deal than what I'm getting with Rogers Ultimate High speed?

I mean, I don't ever have lag problems and I certainly have fast download speeds... but would a 10meg connection reduce my ping to 4-10 and perhaps even let me run a 12 man TF2 server of my own on a seperate box?

I'm fairly tech savy but internet speeds have always been beyond my grasp.

EDIT: Just realized that beanfield is the host of the servers. 151 West is their home office.

If the building you are in is being provided with a fiber connection and the true speed of your port is actually 10mb it would be a better deal as then you would have a much larger upload than Rogers can offer for that kind of price.

Do you have to lock into a contract to get that price or is that just a month-to-month price?

If there is no contract I would recommend trying it out just to see what it's like, if you're willing to spend the money, of course.

I've never heard of these guys so I don't have any opinion on what their service is like.

Get rid of Rogers as they are nazi whores who deserve nothing more than some horrible genital rotting disease. Fiber Optics ftw. $79 is pretty pricey though but if you're already paying that for Rogers, go with Fiber Optic.

PS Fuck you Rogers i hope your company burns to the ground and all your owners are monopolizing bitches die horribly painful and publicly humiliating deaths, preferably televised on Bell Express view satellite.

Rogers Ultimate High Speed is around 6MBPS down, advertised. Actual depends on where you are as well as the server you're talking to. I'm assuming it's going to be similar with fibre. As ArchAngel2 suggested, if it's just a month-to-month price, I'd try it out for a month and see if you notice any big difference.

If you're just concerned about having a 4 - 10 ping, shouldn't you be getting around that? My average is around 8 with Rogers.

I'm the same as iheartyou, but with Bell. I had nothing but outages from their DSL service. The only benefit they provided was unlimited bandwidth, although my 100GB down with Rogers is sufficient. I'm really happy with Rogers - never been out once in the 3 years since I've had it and it's pretty much always blazing fast!

Yeah I've never had major problems with rogers.

A couple of idiot technical support mistakes... but so far in Toronto no major glitches.

I took a look at I only pay $34 a month for net... so I'll probably stick.

I also looked at my ping... 10-14 average.

Yeah stick with Rogers. I have Rogers Extreme, its 8.0 Mbps and costs around $50/month. I get like 5 ping on the servers and my download speed is around 800-900KB/sec. Never had a problem with Rogers. If you are interested and willing to pay more they have 18 Mbps service for $100/month.

For playing games you will not notice a difference because of bandwidth, any cable/dsl/etc. has more than enough bandwidth for games. It's the quality and quantity of the routers and switches the ISP uses that determine your ping. My guess is you will get a lot better ping with the fiber optic line, they are probably a smaller company with less switches/routers (Which is a good thing, to a point, you want the least amount of 'hops', but you don't want to have overloaded switches). The fiber will also probably have a large upload which would allow you to have a server on the line.

I have Rogers Extreme, its 8.0 Mbps and costs around $50/month.
Hmm, they seem to have upped the speed. Last time I checked, it was only 6 MBPS (that was up from 5 when I first subscribed). Did they change the name too? I thought it was Ultra High Speed before...

Yup, they have upped it. That's when they included their 18mb service, although I would go with it as I think it has a reduced 60GB bandwidth cap vs. the 100GB bandwidth cap on Extreme.

I know my service says it's rated at 8mb but I consistently hit 1.1MB/s - 1.2MB/s when downloading from newsgroups.

Anywho, if you have the option go with someone else. TekSavvy offers a decent service with Peer1 routing, which probably would reduce latency as I believe TNR is in Peer1's suite at 151 Front. It's DSL though which may be a deal breaker for some.

And iheartyou...who do you use for phone/tv/internet/wireless? If you say Bell and you're hating on Rogers then you, sir, are an idiot. They are the same type (Note: I didn't say THE same company...) of company with different looking employees.
