View Full Version : Massive Ping spikes, Slow net

Before you even give me that shit about spyware or anything like that.
Cleaned, cleared out, checked (by three different programs) this computer is cleaner than a preacher's sheets.
But BLAM lag spikes, shit ping etc.....but not always, I get breaks in game where I can play for like hour and a half....
Now I'm thinking it's on my providers side...cause I remember a while back I had ping in the 500's no matter what I did....and when I went in to get a new phone I stoped at the company and mentioned it....went home and it was all fixed.
So why am I asking you all what to do?
Just incase I can do something....I want to try.
So....WITH DETAILS not just "Oh reset your modem" or some bullshit like that.
Tell me, how, what, where, etc.
Anyone not staying on topic is warned now, this problem with my net is pissing me off....first one to be a smart ass will end up being insulted....cause really hijacking this thread with a *coughs* stupid video....is just as insulting.

Do the following next time your ping is bad:
Click Start
Click Run
Type cmd and press enter
Enter the following into the prompt:
tracert 204.15.193.50 > nr.txt
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USERNAME
In there you'll find a file called nr.txt - post it's contents.

Nothing you can do about it. It's the way your internet is being routed. You could try to setup a static route but that presents a whole bunch of other problems and I don't support it.

Hop 9 would have been the last hop. It's just set to discard some ping requests :x

i had a similar problem at my old house. some how with the routing i could get in game but my ping would sky rocket to the point where i would get kicked from any server or just lag out. made it impossible to play CSS. moving solved my problem but im sure there's MUCH cheaper solutions.
im actually surprised that a 200ms ping connection is the fastest jump at any point in a route within the same country :S...
QUESTION:: can't the ISP change the routing paramaters to avoid jumps through this part of their network?
note:: i'm not sure if that is possible or not thus being the question, because i assume if it got routed through another router it would work better...
my $$ is on a routing loop problem located somewhere in that portion of the network u get routed through which is flooding that network (if that's the case it's nothing YOU can fix, that company has to fix it)

Easiest answer for all these things is to call you ISP and ask to speak with Tech Support. I am curious as to how they respond, so if you do call, let us know their answer.

generally speaking less hops = better by which most protocols go by, but in his case its not because it is obviously slowing him down

Bell doesn't do much for you. A couple of weeks ago we had the problem with server routing. I called bell to get help and they said sorry. The router was eventually fixed but the minute you say game they can't help you.
Whom is your internet with?

i think he's with www.1000island.net
never heard of them... they run dialup connections from the looks of it though... no wonder ur ping is crazy high =S
EDIT::
if u are with these 1000island.net people did u follow their setup procedure?
http://www.1000island.net/help/dialup.html
that prolly woulda been the 1st thing i did, double checked my settings vs. the recommended settings.

No dialup
DSL
I have the instructions.
Today had crazy ping spikes but I was able to play.
They aren't hugely known I mean "Lansdowne Telephone" The 'town' I live near is the distributor etc.....and they aren't open weekends so you can guess what kind of mom and pop operation I've got to deal with.
(I will be calling them monday and discussing the shitty service and connection I am getting.....for 100 bucks a month I shouldn't have to deal with this as much as I have.)

The issue is with them for sure, apparently they've been having issues (blah blah blah) they're sending some compensation (refund) for the constant problems and said they should have it sorted out soon.

I've been getting problems with lag spikes to...but at the same time my fps will also shoot down to 1 and stay there for about 20 seconds...and it always seems to happen just before a huge firefight...it pisses me off, using the net_graph 3 thing i noticed that when this happens my ping also jumps to about 500 and my out goes down to about 1 and i'm getting like 300 choke...its really sucks. It starts to happeb after about 30 min of play and will happen like every other round. I can't seem to be able to fix it, i thought it may be a heat problem but i took off the side of the case and put a big fan there but nothing...it may just be my shitty card dieing out (x600) i don't know...anyone have any suggestions? i know it's not really related to your problem but I didn't want to make a new thread lol

sounds like an overheating issue dude. your gpu gets to hot and it drops to 1 fps, happens to me too sometimes if i forget to turn up my fan speeds before loading up CSS.
ITS REALLY ANNOYING, cuase it only happens in key moments and its like ... 60 fps solid no issues suddenly u see someone u want to shoot and u hit 1 fps for all of 2-3 seconds then ur either dead or u got lucky and killed him and your back to 60 fps like nothing happened (u usually die)

heh, your tone is a little nasty there Cheeto.
Regardless, that one route is what is messing your latency up as Mano? already pointed out.
How is your ping in other servers+games?
On a sidenote, is the DSL infrared/wireless or something? Is it $100/month for dsl through your phoneline? Thats really pricy if it is via phone. (Might wanna look into diff ISP's)
That shouldsolve the issue altogether + save you money.

The issue has come up again, but not as bad, the ping jump is very brief and sometimes doesn't last past a few seconds. But what they said to what I remember when I went in there in person was "We'll just change your card position." Once I got home did a few things (Giving them time to change the position I guess) everything is fine. Then BOOM bout a week or so later it's back being ghey.
And just to check if it was only CSS I wen and played Jedi Academy and got somewhat the same thing happening. I printed off the hops sheet and I'm going to take it into them on tuesday to show them.
What I thought I fixed ain't fixed....so I might be absent for a little while again.

When I went home for Easter, the internet at my house was really bad too. My ISP told me that there are some issues with some of Bell's lines that they are going to take a look into. Maybe it's related? I don't know

Yup
my sympatico down here in niagara has taken a shit too.
haha ive been gets about 250-400ms lately.
when im used to like 12-30...
and for 100 bucks amonth?
thats bogus bro!
same thing happened when we bought wireless here, they said it would b running at like 4mbs dl speed. I was getting like 15kb/s.
they gave us like 1/16 of the bandwith we were paying for. ISPs are total conartists i tell ya what :).
but hopefully bell gets it act together soon, or im going rogers wireless :S

You'll never get what they're claiming you will, a 3mb connection usually give you a max DL speed of about 300kbps, so you just gota know what to expect is all. But yeah, it sounds like your still getting screwed even with that in mind.

for the price ur paying and the problems ur receiving, just find another service provider is my suggestion.. now if ur in the middle of no where and thats the only ISP available in ur area, that sucks but i pay less than half what you do and get pretty much pain free service from rogers at solid speeds... if there are other providers available use it to ur advantage by demanding a shitload of money back or free/discounted service for a while for the hassle and if they dont comply threaten to switch (smaller providers will usually do anything to keep customers) and then convince the provider you might switch to, to give you a deal for you to switch... i find with all the competition these days between ISP, its very easy to use the threat of shitty service/switching providers to ur advantage
