Hey folks,
I've been playing on the TF2 servers as Gorbachev22 for a few months now and figured I should join the forum. I'm Rob, a temporary Canadian expat, and am currently a doctoral student in economics at the University of Michigan. In my younger years, I used to play the RTS Dark Reign pretty seriously along with a little TFC on the side; I don't really consider myself much of an FPSer, but TF2 has proven to be an exception. You'll generally see me on the servers as a "silent" heavy or engineer. I am notoriously lazy when it comes to using a mic and still prefer to type. However, feel free to yell at me, just expect a text response :)

Haha, welcome to the site!

Welcome, enjoy your stay
P.S. Using your MIC is okay, don't be afraid of the MIC. Much better than typing by far :)

Welcome to the community, and to the forums, hope to see you around on the servers.

Welcome.
The idea of being 'too lazy' to use a mic seems.. odd to me. I mean, you've gotta plug it in (once), but after that it's /way/ less work than typing. Also: you can talk and shoot at the same time.

I find that TF2 is a LOT more fun using the mic. I mean...you can't really yell at people to do something with text :)

hey, welcome! But a mic is just so much more fun to play with, and I would think mic spamming is the lazier thing to do, instead of taking time to type?

Welcome! I've played with you several times and you're a great player to have on ones team :) I fully agree with the mic comments - it's so much easier to press a single button and open my mouth than to press a button and spend the next 10 seconds frantically typing something :)

I'll give it a shot just for you Fourier
Just played my first game with the mic tonight; I can't say that it seemed to make that much of a difference, but I'll stick with it.

Aha. Quite fun playing with/against ya Gorbachev.

DS, I did indeed play online and went by the moniker "JollyElephant"; I certainly remember you from the DR community or at least as well as I recall the community in general (I have a terrible memory). If you're up for a game sometime I could be convinced to reinstall it. Did you keep in contact with any of that group? Unfortunately, I lost contact with pretty much all of my old clanmates.

Aha! JE...what's up man :)
The good ole days of SyN, MR, DI, VuP, IX, *PK*, FOE...etc hahaha
No, I don't really play DR nowadays...it's WAY too fast for me (or maybe I'm too slow now that I'm old) :p There's a community at http://www.darkreign.us/ and I've had a few people ask me if I wanted to play (ie Mesh, Satz, Element, etc...). Maybe we can get a game sometime in the future though :D I still have a few contacts from those days but the only ones I really talk to are pretty much H@VOC and BlackWidow :p
Anyways, welcome to the NR community (one of if not THE best!) :p

I do indeed have a certain "rock star" brother if that is what you're referring to. How did you know? Did Wesley leak this information?

Aww, now I'm curious.
Damn celebrity culture coopting my value system whereby I ignore tabloids...
MUST... RESIST...
p.s. Gorbachev, I suck at playing heavy. Like, I am sniper fodder and fodder for nearly every other class. I don't play it much and I've had a few rounds cleaning up as heavy but that was on nub servers were I held a cap by myself for five minutes.... -_-
General tips? I try to use the shottie often and chaingun only when I know I'm not just arbitrarily spamming, but other than that I'm clueless.

JE get DR1.4b again and let's play one of these nights. Mlarg, do you care if I call you JE or Gorb? :p

DS, I'll install it sometime this week and JE works fine; in fact, i have absolutely no idea how, when or why I changed my name
Fab, when it comes to playing heavy I would only ever have the shotty out at very long distances. However, I think that heavies should generally try to stay out of the open field (especially on defense), as, in that situation, soldiers, demos, and snipers will have the upper hand. I have my best rounds when I resist the urge to run into combat (again while on defense) and, rather, hide around corners or in indoor locations in which the enemy will be nearby, but may take a second to spot you (ie. in db stage 2 at the second cap, i think the hut in front of the point is a great heavy location or in goldrush stages 1 and 2 on defence the passages to the second point can be a killing field for a heavy with a medic). As long as you get a half a second jump a heavy can beat any class one on one. Also, while in such locations you should always be running the minigun.
On offence, you can't really sit and wait quite as well, but combat inside of buildings or tunnels is still the heavies strength. When going around corners you should jump while spinning the minigun and you can usually take any other single class down or a few people if you have a medic. Beyond that, play well enough to get a medic to feel confident ubering you and, in smaller maps, you can often take the cap all on your own (ie Goldrush stg 2 pnt 2, DB stg 1 pnt 1,2). Just run right in there, and gun down medics w/ ubers -> engies -> sgs -> others. This is basically how I play, and I put these ideas down, perhaps with better phrasing, in the strategy thread.

Thanks... I almost never play heavy and when I that all sounds good! When I did similar stuff yesterday (esp. at chokepoints) I cut down a large number of people on by the second last cap of the final round of goldrush. (on defence).
Offensive heavy seems a lot harder to me as he's so slow and you really have to be able to surprise them... I find I actually have to play a lot like pyro in some respects in terms of waiting by a corridor / sneaking along and then jumping out and slaughtering a few or causing some havoc. Hmmm. (I almost never play heavy pyro so any revelations therein are useful.)
