HAI!

How do I split up a large file (around 7gig) for burning onto two DVDs? Is it possible?

(note, my dvds are 4.5 gigs, none of this fancy dual layer stuff)

I believe that there is a way to do it with WinRAR but I don't know how.
Something to look into I guess.

What type of file is it? If it's an AVI, MPG or what-have-you, you can use Nero (or most other burner software) to manage the file down to the 4.7GB standard. If it's a DVD that you're trying to shrink, search the Internet for DVDShrink. (check this link:http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/)

(or, PM me and let me know, and I'll send the program to you - its Freeware, so do NOT pay for it - there's a lot of sites charging for the program, but even the creators "www.dvdshrink.org" have said it's freeware)

It really depends on what you want to do with it. If you just want to backup some data, you can split it into several files (Using one of many splitting programs. HJSplit (http://www.cnet.com.au/downloads/0,239030384,10550267s,00.htm) has always worked great for me) which can then be reassembled later (with the same software). The downside to that is the files are then unusable until they are reassembled.

Well if you just want to burn it to a data-dvd for storage, install winrar.

Right click the file - "add to archive..."

On the bottom left you will see a split to volumes drop down menu. Select dvd+r 4481MB

If you want to be able to watch the dvd's after burning then splitting won't work as Jeff pointed out. You can download DVDFab (it is not freeware) or dvdshrink (freeware) which can either split it to two disks or compress the video respectively.

i think what KT's looking for is something along the lines of what jeff proposed.

and HJSplit works well, i've also used it before.

I'm using IZArc and i'm applying the same process as Adam suggested. Thanks for the help and I'll let you know if it works.

you can split a file into as many seperate ones as you wish with winrar then recompile after there all on your hardrive
