View Full Version : Presenting...Server #5 - ARENA! (67.213.67.75:27015)

Alright guys, TNR Server #5 is now up for public play. It is the new Arena server located at 67.213.67.75:27015.

Server is set up as follows:

- 16v16 (bots will be added if there are empty slots)
- 100% crits
- every 5th round everyone will be switched to the same random class (this means that all the players on the server will be the SAME class)
- disco music will play for after a team wins 5 rounds in a row


On a more serious note, the server should be:
-7v7
- critcals are off
- 5-win streak randomization
- 35-min map limits

I'm assuming this is the case, but you have it set up that it won't allow unbalanced teams till there's an even number of clients?

Also, you might want to think about making it more than 14 slot - perhaps 18 slots. deFy has a server set up where it remains 7v7 or even 6v6, but players who are baddies get dropped after 3 straight deaths.. incentive to do well :) Just a thought, regardless of how things are set up this server is a great idea :)

That's how Valve has it set up currently. As far as I can tell, there's no way around this. :\

They put some ridiculous things into arena :(

I'm actually not sure why it says 14, I have it set up at 22 (so it'll be 7v7). We did a test run yesterday and we had 7v7 going on...so I have no clue why it's saying this. I noticed this before too but haven't had enough people on yet to test this out :|

I may have missed some cvars though...if you have any linky or anything please do send - thanks! :| Been a buncha stuff I've had to slog through so I may have missed some stuff :P

Not dropped from server, but dropped to spec - rotated out. Don't quote me on the 3 deaths or anything, but if you keep sucking you'll get switched out.

35 mins/map seems a little long when you're in there playing it. I'm thinking 20 mins might be enough. Any thoughts on timelimit?

35 mins is only long if you don't like the map :P I vote 24/7 Lumberyard because seeing green in TF2 makes my eyes so happy

Change timelimit or remove granary and well. It's like "omg it's the middle point in a good level and there's not anything very interesting to do"
lumberyard and ravine are da best mang. They put areas in that require a bit more thought regarding where you're going and how you're getting there.
badlands is ok.

Scramble teams more often? I would actually rather constant scrambling than have to play against people I joined the server with for 5 rounds. It gets really painful and boring being on the losing team with people you don't know quite as well for at least 5 rounds.

Granary is kind of gay in Arena. Well isn't the greatest but it's still fun. Badlands works well, but Ravine and Lumberyard are easily the best Arena maps.

35 minutes per map in Arena ends up feeling a little long. Each round goes by rather quickly. 20-25 minutes would probably feel right.

I feel like Arena is not really all that entertaining when there are only a handful of players. You don't really a have a full team dynamic in a 3v3 and around half of the games classes are not really very useful. I'd much rather play a 10v10, but I guess since the arena server is usually empty that's hoping for too much.

Is Arena being a ranked server even a good idea?

My reasoning as to why not:

1 - It's not a 'normal' type map/game, the rankings are built around normal type games. If I die on #1, I come back in 20 seconds, kill 10 straight guys and get back into things. I die on Arena, I might be sitting out a few rounds before I can play again..

2 - If you get a points bonus for every round won (as you do now in normal games) the points people will be getting for winning rounds will skyrocket. If I play 1hr on #1 and that amounts to let's say 10 rounds won and get 20 points...what's an hr worth of Arena wins amount to?

Remember point-whoring engy's prior to February? You got some obscene amount of points (5?) for building a gun...so people would just run around building and blowing up guns and getting 500 points a match. Take that and apply it to "I just won 50 rounds in 20 minutes.."

Arena being unranked I think lends to it's playstyle - quick pickup games, in and out, small doses that can be played then left...as opposed to a normal game where you're likely to stay for hours.

All this of course is moot if you change the modifiers drastically on Arena...and this opens another can of worms - for example, if getting a lv3 sentry up pretty much makes your team win (in some games I have been in this is the case) Engy modifier should be upped - but that wouldn't lend well to the regular servers...

Passport and I noticed last night that this server does not show up in the master list. This could attribute to why I tend to see it empty, or full of TNR community website members only.

Yeah I caught that this morning too...I saw on the homepage 30 people playing GR and was bewildered why nobody was on #5. So I jumped in figuring if 30 ppl are on GR at 1pm, #5 should be jammed full...I searched but #5 was nowhere to be found. Can only connect thru console atm.

Added some stuff to #5 and consecutive win streak before team scrambles lowered from 5 to 3.

3 wins to team scramble really goes by much faster, its much better, it eliminates the painful times when the teams are stacked against you by fluke

Seconded. I very much prefer the arena-only maps. I don't know if it's because they're specifically dedicated for that purpose or I just like the change of scenery?

Lumberyard is my favourite. :)

As for conescutive win streak being lowered from 5 to 3... Is 4 not the happy median between? Three almost seems too short at times, although I guess that makes sense in that if you have a tight game going between two teams, it could take forever to get to four...

I probably answered my own question, but I was wondering nonetheless. If someone could clarify that'd be awesome. <shrugs>
