if the torrents are gay cause of reznet u cant do anything, but since school is over around now for you and your hopefully at home or somewhere where u have control over ports try http://portforward.com/routers.htm, pick ur router and ur torrent program and ur set

Edit: k, i followed that guide and forwarded ports, etc but its still d/ling at like 1kb, and we have rogers highspeed so it should be going a lot faster... what gives? I heard there was a port that Rogers doesn't cap thats used for ps2s and xboxs online gaming, anyone heard of this or am i just making shit up? haha

Gooch that portforwarding thing is a bunch of BS it doesn't change any download speeds with Rogers. If you have Rogers you should know that they have been throttling torrent speeds, which is illegal, but deny that they have been doing it...best solution is to download a Torrent client that encrypts traffic so it cannot be throttled, but you won't ever get back your higher download speeds if you stay on Rogers :(

I have no problem with this discussion as long as you guys are talking about optimizing your Torrent programs for legal downloads ;)

Azureus give you teh option to encrypt your torrent transfers if you wish, it often helps with download speeds of some torrents, but reduces the speed on others.
I've recently switched to uTorrent though, and i find its a bit quicker.

uTorrent will encrypt your traffic, when you are setting it up, look at the bottom of one of those setup windows to enable encryption.

Ok well a couple tips for those that are new to Torrents, first of all no one program is better than the other, pick one that you like and that you are able to choose the port that you are going to use for your outgoing and incoming traffic. On that note pick a port that you don't use a lot... therefore don't use the standard one. I currently use Azerus because it allows me to easilly change my ports, put my upload to 5kb/s and have an unlimited download there for I can optimize my download speeds.
The key difference that I have found is when I played around with the ports that I was connecting with untill I found one that lets me hit crazy dl speeds of about 500 kb/s and an overall DL speed of about 1.3 - 1.6 mb/s
The port that I use to reach these speeds is by setting my incoming TCP listen prot to 49202, and my UDP listen port to 49202. Then I went to my router settings and added my IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (To my specific comp *not your internet ip*) and enabled both TCP and UDP for the port 49202.
*If your router asks you as mine did from what port to what port would you like to open make sure you only open the one port. So you would put 49202 to 49202, and again for both TCP and UDP.
I hope this helps you with improving your *legal* download speeds.

so is there anyway of determining the best port or is it just hit and miss?

Um anything really above 43000 is not really used. I mean for mine I just randomly through in some numbers that were higher than 43000 and lower than 49999 so I mean you could use the same port that I am using..... :p

uTorrent and Azereus will encrypt incoming traffic, you can also use the port 1720, used to work back in the days...
