I'm looking to upgrade my CPU to a dual-core and I was wondering if a) it'd be possible with my mobo and b) what are some good but cost-wise choices for a new proc.
my current specs are:
- AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (San Diego) Socket 939
- MSI K8N Diamond Plus nforce 4 mobo
so I'm looking for a dual core AMD, i thought I could upgrade to dual core with my mobo but it seems they are all AM2 socket req.
Any help would be great... and any suggestions on possible upgrades would be even better

u should be able to grab an x-2 series cpu for that socket type. im looking @ 1 myself with my ASUS A8N SLI-DELUXE mobo. check tigerdirect.ca they have a couple AMD dual-cores going for around $200 (around 2.0GHz dual-core easilly oc'd from what im told)

hypothetically if you got a good batch you could get it to 5.4 with some sex-tacular cooling, but if he told ME he had a 5mb cash to my face I'd kick him straight in the testicles cause he clearly doesn't understand enough about CPU's to make up a half decent lie.

Your 4000+ is pretty much an Athlon FX-53 in disguise. If you bought the chip near the end of S939, it's likely you can hit 3 GHz on air.
The X2 3800+ is dual core, but each core will have less cache (512 K vs 1 MB on your 4000+). You'll notice a huge difference in regular day-to-day stuff because of the extra core. In gaming, you'll notice a performance DECREASE because it is clocked at 2.0 GHz (vs your 2.4 GHz).
If you overclock your X2, you can most likely hit 2.5 GHz without changing anything but the HTT speed. It will likely top out at 2.6 or 2.7 GHz on the stock cooler, 2.8 GHz if you're willing to pump more voltage and get a better heatsink.
