K, I turn on the mic in the volume options.
I double check to make sure that my soundblaster settings permit the mic.
Even check to see if I've got it on mute...and I don't....

The headphone part works, I can hear the music, and sounds....but the mic won't work.....

Any suggestions?

I've had a similar problem before and I hesitate to mention it because it is so basic...

Some mics have a remote (with a little volume dial) on the cord and if there is a mute button on there, no amount of volume tweaking in Volume Control will fix the problem if that button is engaged.

I have that problem about 3 to 12 times a day

If at all possible try plugging it into another computer, one which you know has it's mic setting in order. It is possible, though unlikely, that it is defective out of the box.

make sure you havent clicked the "mute" checkbox in vent... happens all the time to everyone and usually takes hours to figure out.

also im not sure what kind of headset you have but the ones most of us have, have this small switch on the cable beside the volume adjuster, and it likes to flick itslef to the mute mic position.

or sound card

The Mic's likely just plugged in the wrong slot or in one that is not enabled with your sound driver's software. It took me a while to figure out my soundblaster

The easist way to fix this is to get a digital camera, take pics of how you have everything hoocked up, what hardware you're using, and get screen shots of every page of your sound card set-up utility. Post away Ty.

well i hesitate to post this but past experience with soundblaster cards and voice comms leads me to say this:

you may very well have everything set up correctly and indeed some one said they heard you faintly on vent so go to sound control panel and check to see if mic boost is on. The problem being i have found in the past that it may VERY well be on and you have to un check it press ok to go out of sound control panel then go back in to check it again to re initialise mic boost.

That used to happen to me fairly often with my audigy card where it seemed to have lost the fact that mic boost was in fact on. So in short even if it seems mic boost looks on - take it off then come out of sound panel - go back in then put it back on and try again. Also make sure your mic record level is sufficiently high too.

Does it work in Microsoft sound recorder? If so, you can start working on other application settings but if it doesn't, don't bother doing anything with vent.

Probably the best thing to do is hook up some screenshots like Orion said, and hook up your headset on another computer to make sure it's not DOA.

Are you running Vista?

Cause Vista is having all sorts of sound problems
