So my order came in from NCIX, and along with a bunch of other goodies, I finally got my Razer DeathAdder. There were a couple reasons why I wanted a new mouse:

1. My current mouse, a Logitech MX510, was old and showing heavy wear. The mouse feet are falling off, the logo and thumb rests are wearing away.
2. The MX510 emits a high pitched squeal due to the IR emitter it uses in the scroll wheel mechanism. I had an MX518 but I opted not to open it up because it experiences the same problem. [Reference] (http://jdc.parodius.com/logitech)
3. This mouse has 1000 Hz polling for even better response.

This side by side comparison shows that the two mouses are about the same size. Though in my hand, the DeathAdder feels much larger because there is no recessed groove for the thumb. One thing to note, the mouse cable is so wimpy compared to my MX510. Too bad they didn't follow Logitech and use a braided cable like on the G5/G7 series. The mouse wheel moves very smoothly with less tactile clicks and much less noise than the MX510.

The feet on the DeathAdder leaves much to be desired. They are VERY thin and it feels like the mouse body is scratching on the surface of my desk. The red glow of the optical sensor is also very dim compared to the MX510... the third generation infrared sensor in action.

The curve of the mouse body is enough to make it feel different. There is no feeling of loose mouse buttons like on the MX5xx series, where the plastic body floats over the actual switch mechanism. There is no groove for the thumb, but there are for your index and middle fingers. The smooth thumb rest is a little odd because for some reason I developed a habit of rubbing my thumb to make sure I get a good hold on the mouse. I rest my palm on the mouse, so I have a feeling that the rubberized top (the same material on the thumb/pinky rest of the MX510) is going to wear off very fast.

On the software side of things, it was easy to setup. Plug it in, install the drivers and reboot. I had to drop the Windows sensitivity down to tick 3 with 1800 DPI to get it to have a similar sensitivity to my old MX510. Also I managed to disable the glowing wheel and logo in the drivers. It sounds very hollow when I pick up the mouse and drop it back on the desk, but the weight is about the same as the MX510. The mouse clicks are sharper, and the thumb button clicks are fuller and louder. I wish there was side scrolling. Those are the only complaints I have about the mouse so far.

I have yet to game with it, but I'm sure I'll get used to it soon. I'm already getting used to the lack of high pitched squeal... it's so much more comfortable!

Thanks Sharp for being the guinea pig and picking up the mouse before I did ;)

Nice review Brian. I would recommend that everyone who buys a new product do a thorough write-up to offer assistance to others considering a similar purchase. This could be a very valuable section of the forums for all the hardware geeks amongst us - which is everyone... hahaha

It's rubber-coated if I'm not mistaken

That mouse would be a no no in my house. That thin wire is a magnet for my cat to chew. She doesn't touch my logitech MX510 wire but the thin one she would go for. She chewed through 2 headphone wires and 3 ear bud wires. But damn nice review...it is a very pretty mouse :)

:)

I got it when it was on special for $50 at NCIX. Now it's $60.

The top is smooth rubbery stuff, almost like a racquet's handle tape, but stiff and not bouncy. Dust sticks to it easily.

After using the mouse for a little over half a day, the movement feels smoother than my MX510. Not sure if it's due to the slight change in sensitivity or what. The smooth plastic sides also get greasy very easily, so I find myself frequently wiping it and washing my hands.

Be sure to finish those potato chips before playing next time Brian. lol.
I think I will stay with my G5 for now, until something spectacular knocks my socks off.

Ok I found one more annoyance. If I move my mouse too far to the left, it hits my keyboard. The part that hits the keyboard? Mouse 1.... so I end up firing my gun if I turn too fast. :|

I also have this mouse (Razer DeathAdder) and have had it for about 2 months now and am very pleased with it. I would have to agree with Brian that the sides do get slippery from time to time; however, I don't find the top ever really does due to the rubery material.

I just took a look at my mouse feet and have noticed that I have not seen any real change from when I bought the mouse. That being said you have to take into account that I am using a mouse pad made by razer that has a smooth fabric top on it. (Razer Mantis Speed)

Another benifit this mouse seems to bring to the table is the fact that the top of the mouse is all one piece. (ie the mouse buttons *Left click and Right click* are not seperate pieces from the main resting point of your palm* The reason that I say this is a benifit is due to the fact that I don't really see how the buttons are going to wear out or loosen up or shift as there does not seem to be a weak point. However that being said time will tell.

Myself unlike Brian have left the lighting on but have stopped the pulsating LED in the center of the mouse which lights up the razer logo from pulsating because I found it quite distracting and anoying from time to time but that can be very easily changed in the mouse driver options.

The mouse drivers also offer full support for both Vista 32 BIT and 64 BIT and work properly which is a huge plus at this point in time as very few drivers drivers eaither have been released for Vista or work properly.

Overall I would rate this mouse at about an 8/10. The only downfall that I have experienced as stated above is every once in a while the sides getting a bit slippery.

I hope both the review that Brian (aka Wesley Crusher) and myself have put together helps you guys in the future when decideing on a mosue to purchase and I will keep you guys up to date if anything new or exciting happens with the mouse.
