IRON GRIP
This game is everything Empires should have been. It's got beautiful maps, really cool battle mechanics (that work!) and a great combo between FPS and RTS.
Rather than assign a leader to either team who simply builds things, this game is a true split down the middle of FPS/RTS. One team, the resistance, is played as a standard FPS. The other, controlled by a single Tyrannical ruler in a RTS style. The evil ruler can build units, buy upgrades, tanks, etc. His goal is to take three strategic locations from the resistance. The resistance fighters have a difficult task, protect their locations long enough to find and kill the evil General.
Well, this link will explain it better (plus there's a video):

Hey, until I found this game, I was a fan of Empires. Even with it's poor maps and sketchy-at-best gameplay. If Empires is coal, this game's a diamond.

Well, works for me. Plus, CS is a way better game, but sometimes you gotta broaden your game library. This is definitely a game I would recommend you try.

Before I read your post, know that Ima hunt you down
[Addition]
Maybe I'm biased because I played both 1.0 and 1.1 Iron Grip, and I know how much both of those versions were simply terrible.
Yes it's a great concept, I was looking forward to it for a long time, and yes the art is rather nice
But come on
The comparisons to Empires are somewhat limited if you've played both games. Compared to CSS, yes they are very similar, but does Iron Grip and Empires offer the same things? Not really. Tank battles? nope, big maps? Nope, real multiplayer battles? nope. Their mechanics are very different.
The main problems for me when I played was that
It's hard to get a balance between the commander and the other players
Big possibility for griefers if someone goes commander and purposely loses (this happened a lot)
Poor variety
Major Lag (welcome to Source modding though, every mod gets better with age)
I don't get the statement " This game is everything Empires should have been" to me that means "This is what I wanted out of Empires" which is fine. I agree that Empires 1.07 can get very lame at points and this is why we're under big pressure to release the new version, because it's a very different game.
I think Iron Grip and Empires should combine forces in some respects, because an Iron Grip game type would be a neat addition to Empires, but I really enjoy Empires for it's huge gameplay, the tanks, the basebuilding the teamwork, the Engineer and all that jazz. They are similar games, but there are so many things that makes Empires different, and they happen to be the things that I really like.

I think Empires is starting to look better

And of course there's always room for growth
Like Maps that are 16 times bigger, which is necessary for aircraft... (This map is a Work in progress obviously)

Here's an example of one of the new maps, Glycencity, and an artistic example of some of the game play (it's something I could quickly find)

1.0 and 1.1? Hell, that's why. Up until the more recent versions the game has been poor, but now it's tweaked to perfection. I admit that there are no real tank battles (aside from fighting enemy tanks) but smaller levels are a good thing for anyone on foot, which is usually a majority. No running for hours. The RTS/FPS genre is still in it's infancy and therefor still experiencing some problems, neither game is perfect, but I recommend you give IG a try (but get the latest version.
The main issue that I find with Empires is that it just isn't fun as a FPS. Unless you grab a vehicle you end up running long distances just to get shot by a tank. It's a good game. Hell, when it first came out I spent more than my fair share of hours playing and I still do from time to time, but it simple wasn't what I expected when I heard "FPS/RTS". Whereas IRon Grip WAS.
EDIT: Btw, new map looks great, even though it is a WIP.

It's why I put the link below it, stupid Google
Usually if you have to run forever to get into battle, someone is doing something wrong. Either you should be taking an APC with you or your Comm should be giving you a forward barracks. If you want to get decent at a mod, it's almost required that you join their forums. I'd suck if it wasn't for the EM Forums
about the RTS/FPS thing, Iron Grip is RTS or FPS, while Empires is RTS and FPS
I almost only play the FPS part, I'm not very good at commanding or vehicles (but getting better at vehicles). A lot of the combat is FPS style, especially on the new maps where mappers have finally finished creating whole cities. Of course, I usually default to Engineer because that's my best class.
Pro Tip: Get good at the mortar and you'll never have to fear tanks or long range infantry
2nd Pro Tip: Check your PM Jeff
I'm downloading Iron Grip 1.32 now
