Hey guys, I've got a friend who just installed CS:S, and HL2. He bought the retail box and everything, so it's a legal key and contains uncorrupted game files. However, he's stil;l having issues. The install goes through normally, but whenever he launches a game the game launching window opens and closes and no game is launched.

I can get more detailed info if needed but perhaps one of you has a quick fix or experienced this kind of problem.

Anyway, thanks in advance from Karm 27 and me.

Stupid question maybe, but is he using any kind of firewall or program that needs to have permissions set to access the internet ?

Is the Steam icon in his system tray ?

That happens whenever I try to launch the original CS, wtf?

Try adding -autoconfig to the launch preferences.

Yeah, he's going home now to see if that'll work.

You two are both idiots and I am betting your both running Norton Anti Virus like me. It is a known issue with steam, read the steam forums or you can just disable your Norton while your playing css then just re-enable it when your done(That is what I do). I mean as long as your do regular scans of your comp and you know your spywear and everything is up to date you should not have any problems. I guess untill then just keep reading the steam forums and see if valve releases a fix, untill then I recomed you eaither do what I have said or you got to the forums and read what they recomend mind you I would be weary about some of the ideas that they have. Some recomend you to add steam and your temp internet files to a safe list with Norton which is absolutly rediculus so I wouldn't do it, but it is up to you guys.

Who the fuck uses Norton anti virus anyway. Its the worst program ever. Your more apt to catch an incoming virus by overlapping 6 layers of mosquito netting and applying over your internet connection.

lol Gerry's right. This is just more proof on how bad Norton is.

btw - I got this one day while I was working: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c208/manofphat/NAV06.jpg

I will never use that program again.

If any of you are looking for a program that kills both spyware and virus, I would recommend Spysweeper with Antivirus by Webroot. It has caught alot of stuff that Norton would only tell you after the fact "hey, you have a virus, and we know that, but we cant get rid of it". No more Norton for me.

That's weird. cause as far as I know it's just a problem with most Antivirus program's script blocking protocols. It's not an actual trojan spawning, it's a .tmp file required to start up the game. When the game finds it's not there it tells you it's unavailable.

Perhaps you have some other security program that is blocking it?

As for my friend, that's not the issue, he doesn't use Norton and he has even tried turning off AVG but the issue still persists. It just doesn't start up, but it gives no alert message saying that anything went wrong.

Yeah I am having the same problem...f'ing annoying. I normally do turn off my AV when I am playing. Maybe I just forgot to the last few times. Well I feel much better knowing I don't actually have a virus.

This is happening all over, the first time I heard about it is when Insurgency released 1.1, a bunch of people with Norton started spamming their forums wondering why there was a Trojan in the release

oh shit - Jeff, did your friend install insurgency?

Cleavage Monkey

Ok it works now....frickin Norton. I uninstalled all the Norton components (it was free with Rogers) and reinstalled AVG (which I used to use anyway) and I can play again :).

Tried it, didn't make any difference.

Nope, he just installed CS: S, HL2: DM, & DOD: S from an official/original CD. His system stats meet/exceed what are need. No warning message of any kind pops up. It simply says it's openning it, then goes away and it never opens.

Try deleting your clientregistry.blob to force an update of Steam.
After the application disappears, check your device manager to see of hl2.exe is still running but is just stuck.

Man, there have been more than a few people on the Empires forum unable to get Steam to work properly, yet I've never had a problem. I wonder what the big problem is.

Latest Symantec Antivirus Definitions fixes the false trojan detection problem. Do a Liveupdate and CS:S should launch without issue.
