Isn't the first time he's done this either.

But I'm sure the NHL will find a way to let him off:

Now, i don't consider myself a hockey expert of any kind.
Looking at the video and trying to find a way to avoid the knee-on-knee. Had Ovechkin moved his knee closer to his left knee, he would've avoided the knee collision, but also hitting the other player while leaning towards him (as a result of moving his right knee closer to his left one) would've generated a massive hit that could result in more serious injury (ie concussion, broken colarbone, etc). This is what i think went through his mind at the moment. To me, what happened, was the lesser bad.

definitely not lesser bad - both players always guard for hits and brace upper body, there's more force in the hit but it's equal on both sides.
With a knee on knee, the "defending" player doesn't see it coming and it just straight up blows there knee out, which is potentially career ending. Your shoulders can take a lot more force than your knees.

Not to mention that you don't have to absolutely plow every guy you see. If a guy moves at the last second, you definitely don't stick your knee out.
Surprising - he got two games (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=300686)

2 games doesn't matter. He would have been out for them anyway.
Ovie will end some one's career- if not his own first.
