It's hard to tell at the moment.

On a side note, Bell TV subscribers need to call Bell and activate 5 dedicated channels for Olympic coverage. Both SD and HD feeds are available.

There's no point in looking forward to anything in the Olympics.

If it's the winter Olympics all you get is coverage of figure skating.
If it's the summer Olympics all you get is coverage of gymnastics.

TSN had a program break a couple of hours ago and showed the crash. At that time they just knew it was serious but now that it's a confirmed death they probably won't show it anymore. It went the way it looked in that cam... flips off the track, stops against a gigantic steel support beam. There was no getting away from it alive. So damned sad.

I agree the whales swimming across the floor were amazing. My other favorites were, the dude jumping through the Olympic rings on the snowboard, the prairie portion of the cultural show mainly because one of my favorite singers appeared (Sarah McLachlan). The giant LCD bear and the northern lights of the winter part was pretty cool too.
Even with the torch hydraulic fail it was still a pretty damn good show. The moment of silence was a nice touch too. I'm glad that did that.

At first I thought it was a bit off they would do that... but then I realized it shows respect of the athletes and the risk they take on every run.

I think a picture of the impact would have sufficed rather than to subject the little kiddos who stayed up to watch the ceremonies to a visual of a man hitting a solid object at 144 kmph and just stopping.

Also, it was a mistake for Vancouver to claim that they were going to surpass Beijing's Opening Ceremonies... a 10th of the budget and maybe a 30th of the man power. (Honestly I think it'll be a while till anyone tops Chinas display >_>)

I am pretty sure that if someone were to have fucked with Gretzky, they'd have been torn to shreds by the rest of the people in the nearby area.

The Vancouver Olympic opening ceremonies smashed Canadian TV records to become the most-watched broadcast event in the nation's history, an incredible feat in the age of the Internet.

An average 13.3 million Canadians tuned in to every minute of the 31/2-hour festivities that kicked off the 2010 Winter Games Friday night.

...

The sky-high Canadian ratings came as a shock to Carmi Levy, a media and tech analyst in London, Ont.

"It's unbelievable. It basically means that everybody you know watched it, or if they didn't watch it, were sitting next to someone who did," he says. "It's about as massive a shared experience as we are ever going to get in the age of the Internet."

Of course, back in 1993, that penalty was allowed to be called by the linesmen as well, but during that confab between them, it looked pretty obvious that Fraser wasn't going to let them do that.

I'm glad they've changed the rule since then (it used to be "high stick + cut = automatic 5 minute penalty and game misconduct") to allow for some leeway by the refs. If that was allowed back then, Fraser could have called a 2-minute minor instead.

Of course, the way that Wendel Clark was abusing the Kings that night, he would have scored the power play goal and....

I'm glad ctvolympics.ca is streaming the games. I'm basically in Detroit, so we only get CBC down here. So my only option to watch the Olympics on TV is the NBC coverage, which is US-focused.

With the streams it's actually kind of nice to watch them without the play-by-play commentators. You don't notice it at first, but it's sort of like watching a sit-com without a laugh track.

I love watching international hockey. The only thing that sucks is that it's essentially a 6-team tournament (Canada, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Finland, and US). So, other than a few teams that can compete somewhat, like Slovakia, the preliminary rounds are just a series of curb-stompings.

Yeah, that's true. In the World Championships they usually can't compete that well because they don't have depth with the NHL play-offs going on. But here they'll have everybody. They still aren't as deep as some of the top teams, but they definitely can be more competitive than usual and have the potential to be a spoiler.

Also, Slovakia has never had a competitive goalie. With Halak, that could change.

grum the initial arguments were for who is competitive in the tourny

And that's why I mentioned the Swiss. They are competitive. After seeing this game, would you really want to face them in the playoff round? The only two teams that aren't competitive are Latvia and Norway. Slovakia and Switzerland are good enough that they could easily jump up and surprise any of the "Big Six" teams in the playoffs.

Sure, they lose in the shootout, but they completely blew away the idea that they'd get out-muscled by Canada on the small ice. In fact, for large portions of the game, they were beating Canada to the puck and applying big pressure with the forecheck.

It was definitely not, as suggested by someone before the game, a "curb-stomping".

Oh, and by the way, I'm reminded of this concert bit when I watch the speed skating and downhill skiing:

no it was for short stretches, and it was poor unorganized leafian pressure with low quality scoring chances
the swiss played a very solid defense first game, a game that kept the score close and fortunately for them they capitalized on their few chances
canada didnt play a very solid defense game, doughty pinched and it cost, they didnt keep the 3rd man high, which they ought to be doing against the swiss knowing they play like this

So, other than a few teams that can compete somewhat, like Slovakia, the preliminary rounds are just a series of curb-stompings.

No, that comment refers to the entire preliminary round against anyone other than the big six. That's what I was referring to when I suggested people better take Switzerland seriously.

I only saw the third period, but the Swiss weren't as competitive as the score seemed to indicate. Hiller stood on his head. The Swiss barely held Canada in their own end, didn't generate any quality scoring chances and were out-shot by nearly a 2:1 margin.

But at least they managed to keep the game interesting. They did play pretty well defensively, even though that's really all they did. They did a good job getting their sticks in the way to block passes and lifting sticks before a shot could be taken.

I saw a little bit of Germany against Sweden too. They look like they can actually keep a game reasonably close too.

I've noticed time and again that the Canadian athletes don't pace themselves. They want to be at the front for the entire race, and once it's comes to the final stretches, they are fatigued and end up last. Happened in both mens and womens short and long track speed skating.

If you observe, all the people that won started at the end of the pack and made their move to the front with 1-2 laps left to go. Too bad the Canadian athletes fail at this.

In other news, I don't think anyone can contend against Canada in Men's curling.

I think it would be hard NOT to convert that partisan crowd into a burst of adrenaline at the beginning of the race, and then realize you've got nothing left in the tank at the end.

When it comes down to it, the reason Canada is going to fall short in their medal predictions is going to be the failure on the alpine events and the speed skaters (long/short).

However, as long as they lose graciously (unlike some whiny bitches (http://www.ctvolympics.ca/speed-skating/news/newsid=47906.html#tuitert+steals+gold+from+davis+s tunning+upset)), that's okay. The pressure was immense.

Even Morrison for that matter. He tried pretty hard to keep up with the leader's time, while the Russian he was paired up against was at one point 1.5s behind pace. And then at the final stretches the Russian came out of nowhere to take a 0.05s lead.

In the short track, that Tanya Vincent or whatever chick had the same problem. Tried to stay at the front and ended up dead last almost a full 30 mins behind the winner.

I don't think they could have put up a worse effort if they were paid to throw the game.

The only reason Russia looked liked they sucked is because Canada pounded them into submission. It was textbook execution of small-ice play.

It was a perfect strategy, probably designed with the idea in mind that the second game in two nights would mean a tired 3rd period for the Canadians. So they needed to go out and establish the tempo early and "hang on" for the 3rd period (hence the lack of scoring then).

Can they do the same thing against Slovakia?
Probably, but they were so keyed up to play the Russians that it might not be as intense.

Now, if they get to the finals and it's USA waiting for them...well, that game will be one for the ages.

And do what?
Sit in a bar to watch the game in Vancouver?

You'll never be able to get a ticket.
The game against the Russians were going for $900/each in the upper bowl, >$2500 for a pair in the lower bowl. For the gold medal game, I expect the price to be double from the scalpers.

I know MoeB probably doesn't care... but Joannie Rochette won the bronze medal. So gutsy and brave of her.

Yeah, they're playing about as well as the Russians did.

The US are coming at them with a lot of speed, but even now that the US has let up a bit, the Finns still can't complete a pass. They just don't look like a very good team. I didn't see the quarter-final match-up, but unless Kiprusoff stole that one, you have to wonder how the Czechs possibly could have lost to them.

And you have to wonder about the coach's decision to keep Kiprusoff in net after the third goal. It's not like they didn't just see a perfect example of how not to handle that type of situation 2 days ago. And in these international tournaments, they have a perfectly capable NHL star goalie as their back-up.

It's not every often you see a goalie pull himself. You could pretty much see the shit in his pants as he headed off the ice.

why would u be nervous, canada out shot them 2:1, shut down all their speedy forwards, and their goals were weak
plus randy factor of point shots going through luongo is less than it is for brodeur

I'm nervous because a loss to the US on home soil for the gold medal would be about the worst thing to ever happen.

Wow.

EPIC choke by the women's curling team.

They were an easy straight take-out away from winning in the 10th, and a (fairly simple) double take-out from winning in the 11th, and the skip blew both of them.

The Swedish team is still stunned they get the gold medal.
