The most over-hyped day of the year.

So Toskala gets sent to Anaheim, has to deal with immigration issues, doesn't see a minute of playing time then gets traded back to Canada to play behind Kiprusoff for the second time in his career.

Leafs send Ponikarovski to Pittsburgh for Caputi and Skoula then send Skoula to New Jersey for a 5th rounder. I don't think the Leafs should expect much from Caputi. Most of the forwards in the Pens' system top out at 3rd line grinders. He might be able to be a decent role player, but I wouldn't expect him to be much of an offensive contributer.

Still no real blockbuster trades yet, but the deadline is still 20 minutes away (although the Kovalchuk sweepstakes are already over). Seems like teams are fighting the cap and mostly dealing in depth players.

You'd figure Philly is looking for a goalie.

Whitney is probably the biggest name expected to be moved.

toskala never played behind kipper before... they were in the san jose system at the same time though. Kipper was behind Nabokov, and when he was shipped out Toskala came in to back up Nabokov.

Washington did very well, picked up some key depth players - Belanger is solid, and Walker is the type of grinder they'll greatly appreciate come playoffs. Corvo was a good add as well.

and for whoever mentioned Caputi only turning out as a 3rd line grinder... he had 111 pts in 66 games in his last year of the O, and he's put up decent (but not stunning) numbers in the A. He definitely has the potential to be more than a 3rd line grinder.

Chicago didn't get a goalie, which might hurt them, but they could also get away with Huet, much like Detroit has gotten away with Osgood in the past.

I'm not totally sure. Wasn't Nabokov a hold-out one year and Toskala was back-up to Kiprusoff briefly? Although, I think, San Jose actually dealt Kiprusoff because they felt Toskala was going to be the better goalie.

I don't know about that. The forward depth will probably help them. But they didn't address their goaltending concerns. Theodore doesn't seem like he can be relied on to carry a team far in the play-offs. Varlomov played well briefly in the play-offs, but it seems the Pens managed to exploit some of his weaknesses as the series went on. And he's been injured most of this season and has been pretty poor in his last couple of games since coming off injury.

The big concern is defence, and adding Jurcina and Corvo I don't think helps them at all. They need solid defenceman, not more offensive defencemen that are prone to give-aways. That's what will potentially kill them come play-offs.

The NHL is full of guys who were big producers and could never translate it to the NHL. Obviously most players who make the NHL had to have been a dominant player at some level of hockey.

So far he's done nothing to really show that he'll be anything more than a complimentary player at the NHL level (or even the AHL level). He was traded for an impending UFA, so the Pens obviously weren't that high on the kid.

That said, it's all speculation. He's produced at a high level before, so he could develop into a player that could do it. I just wouldn't expect him to.
