I think that you're about to get a bunch of posts saying you should get an Intel dude. I'm an AMD guy too but right now I think Intel is still owning them. Someone that follows everything closer than me should be on soon to give you some actual stats.

Ready the Intel phasers boys...
Big reasons for going with Intel ATM
1. Better OC'ing
2. Better overall benchmarks
3. Socket 775 has better future proofing vs. AM2 which is done come the AMD Quads
4. Price is still competitive on duals, and is blowing AMD out of the water as far as Quad projections go.
Once again, post budget, we'll get back to you.

like $350 and i have an intel pentium D 3.00ghz, 775 socket, quad core ready. Im not to pleased about the cpu, but i dunno if a better one wud help, or if i shud just change the mobo and cpu all together, but that wud cost more, and as u said, am2's are gonna die so....

Well, on vent you said your mobo has support for quad core, go with with an e6700 or a q6600 depending on what you want to do.
Quad if you have alot of multi-thread apps or do alot of multi-tasking.
or
Dual Core if you want a little extra performance on fewer threads.

My advise to you is not to switch to an AMD mobo. You'll get better performance but in terms of value and cost effectiveness I would not consider it a good investmehnt.
The two CPUs I would recommend are the Intel Q6600 (289.99 CND+tax) and the Intel E6600 (260 CND + Tax), both CPUs will run source very well. The extra 30$ buys a lot more performance but won't do much in terms of noticing better game play in Source. People will brag about getting 300 FPS playing source but your eyes won't be able to tell the difference between 140 and 300.
If you are a very major multi-tasker or plan to play more recent titles and continue to play for years to come go for the quad core. If cash is tight or you're just looking for something nice to play source on go for the Dual core.

Chris, haven't we dragged the benchmarks out already? Explain yourself.

chris, why would you go with an e6600?

Get the following
Pentium Dual Core E2160 - $100
Asus P5K-VM - $125
Any set of 2 GB DDR2-667 or DDR2-800 - $90
--
About $360 after tax
Overclock the 2160 to 3 GHz and you're set for ~100 FPS in CS:S. The board is a good overclocker, you just need to point a fan at the northbridge sink. It'll also handle a quad core no problems.
EDIT:
Just realized you already have an existing 775 system. What motherboard and RAM do you have? If it's C2D ready you can pick up a used E6300/E6400 for around $130 shipped.

isn't AMD's new socket (AM3) supposed to be backwards compatible with AM2?
ORION

New socket is labeled "Socket F" and is designed for Quadcore only if I'm not mistaken, but has the support (like macs and other server boards, to support multiple CPU's on 1 board)

thanks :D been looking for that name for the last few months.

I don't think so (), the next socket is AM2+, which is backward compatible. Socket F is for the dual CPU set ups, the FX-72/74
I think if you already have a 775 system, it would be silly to switch over. Go for a decent cpu and maybe some more ram. Also, what kind of hard drive are you using, IDE or SATA? That has an impact.

Touch? on the Mobo deal, I'll take your word for it but I'd appreciate some sauce(source). F is what was stirring up the hive when Intel was talking Quads, so it's what I've been looking at as standard. In any case, hype is just hype, God speed to AMD in taking the benchmark poll on their up and coming releases.
Also: IDE v. SATA will make no more then a 3 fps difference in CSS. SATA is nicer to work with if running swap-file drives, or even when installing shit/ moidfying drive contents, but FTMP it doesn't mean that much.

really? I figured the bandwidth upgrade in SATA would be noticeable in games
oh, and google gave me this source http://www.trustedreviews.com/cpu-memory/news/2007/07/20/AMDs-AM2-And-AM3-Details-Revealed/p1
though i'm sure I read it on engadget somewhere.
I miss AMD

yea, im getting q6600 not 6750 cuz my mobo wont support 1333mhz bus, so im puttin the order in today, thanx a lot for the help guys :)

1.) Not everyone overclocks
2.) Better benchmarks on more expensive processors
3.) Good Point
4.) Price/Performance in the dual core department AMD is still ahead of intel imo, top of the line amd dual core for $189
its basically preference but to say that there is no reason to go AMD is fanboyism

4. Is explicitly about Quad cores.
2. You're dumb.
I thought the discussion was over, fuck preference, given his current setup he'd be an idiot to switch manufacturers. THERE IS NO REASON FOR HIM TO GO TO AN AMD SETUP (UNLESS IT WAS FREE).
Believe me and my Athlon XP system, I'm not a fukken fanbow, let's see what AMD brings to the table on their next line, until then, if me saying Intel is better isn't good enough for you then the market saying they are ought to be.
