    Monitor recommendations

So I want a second monitor. For productivity purposes and whatnot.

I'm in a little debate, however. Plus I need some input for a monitor purchase.

Right now I have a 20 inch Samsung Syncmaster running at 1600 x 900. It's a beautiful monitor for normal conditions, but when it comes to darker pictures or gaming, it's a little lackluster.

The contrast ratio is a bit ugly, but not terrible. Blacks could be a lot blacker.
The latency is noticeable and it bugs me. It's not awful, but it's noticeable. When I originally went from my CRT to this LCD, I could notice images weren't appearing as fast as they shoot be. Like when sniping, I'd click, and there was a latency to it. Very tiny, but there. It could very well be lag, but whatever.

Anyways, to cut a long story short, I now want another monitor. The debate now is do I spend less and get a smaller / secondary monitor, or do I all out replace my current LCD?

I'm very willing to spend sub-200 USD for a new monitor. Would 200 get me a nice monitor?
I want a 22 inch, I think. I mean, if I'm going to do it, I might as well get a bigger one. I think that would be put me in the 1920 x 1080 resolution area, right?
Also, if possible, I want to fall in the 2ms response time. My current is 5 ms.

tl;dr I want to spend about 200 USD for a monitor that will be used for gaming and watching movies. Either that or I spend about 110 on a smaller, probably 5:4 LCD for multitasking.

    Thanks for any input.

    Re: Monitor recommendations

My 22" LCD recommendation has not changed since this monitor was first released:

    Dell 2209WA
    1680x1050
E-IPS panel (great colour reproduction and viewing angles)
Very low latency (re: your sniping example), you can even overdrive it to 75 Hz if you like v-sync (with triple buffering)
Usually costs ~$200-220 when Dell has it on sale.

On an LCD, blacks won't ever really be black unless you manage to find an old NEC MultiSync with an A-TW polarizer (advanced true white).

I have the Dell 22" ultrasharp that Brian is recommending (it's about 2 years old now) and it is a super nice monitor.

Those are the same monitors they use in the engineering building here at MSU.

Given that it goes on sale, I'll probably get that one.

$200 should get you a 24inch screen though it won't be the best, like the Dell

I think I'll take quality over quantity at this point.

How often does Dell have sales?

I can not stress how pleased I am with this monitor.

Great size, great price, and really great picture. Its a brand new model, and its the bomb. I picked it up for sometimes you can find it on sale for $200 CAD. I can't think of a monitor that compares at this price point.

EDIT: Forgot to mention about this "I want to fall in the 2ms response time. My current is 5 ms." You are in for a big let down if you think you are going to notice a difference.
