    Toronto Internet Stuff.

    Hi ladies and gents.

okay, so i have Rogers Highspeed Internet for a couple of more days. I hate rogers, so I canceled and went with TekSavvy, who said that they can service me, but called back like mid-last week saying it isn't available in my area. i live at Yonge and Eglinton, so i'm right near a bell CO so I think it's shit - so I called Bell, and they said the same thing. So obviously it's not shit, or else I've run into consistent retards, which could be it..

Does anyone have any internet companies they can suggest that are in toronto and that might work in my POOR UNPOPULATED AREA! (read: it's not poor, nor unpopulated.) so once again, I'm @ Yonge and Egg.

    spanks bitchfaces.

there used to be a high speed wireless service that worked if your condo/apartment/house had a clear view of the top of the CN tower. I think it was called 'Look'.

to bad rogers owns just about every cable company and trying for a dsl connection usually means renting the copper landline from Bell anyways. Between the two it's a total monopoly.

your basic choices are dsl, cable, and wireless. if Bell can't give you dsl, no one can. Cable co's don't resell their lines generally, so its rogers or no one.
That leaves wireless. a couple companies probably offer it, but I don't know the ones in TO.

doesn't make sense though that its not offered there. Yonge and Eglinton in Toronto is one of the most densely populated areas of the country. I know people in the area that have bell, so it comes to me as a big surprise just as Ender that its not available. That's why I asked about rogers home phone. Most of the "lookup" stuff they do to determine if its available is by your home phone number. If you don't have bell, it will come up as not available even though it might not be entirely true.

Even if you have a bell phone line, see if your neighbor does then call with his phone number or do the online look up here .

Speaking as a bell reseller myself (I found NR because it has consistently low ping to me), I can say that DSL coverage of Toronto is fairly patchy. Some 10%-ish of the city is not covered. That said, Young and Eglington is the location of a CO. IIRC, the CO is South and East of the intersection by a bit --- but I don't have a map at home.

Now... an earlier poster is right. Having a non-bell phone is a problem. While you should be able to get DSL on a rogers line, it may take some cajoling and your ISP will need to know that. IIRC, there's still some sprint lines around --- they cannot be served. If you're in either one of these boats, you can get a dry DSL or you can get another home phone provider.

But another way to fix this is to find a nearby friend with service and make a wireless link to them. search google for a yaggi (antenna).

... or leave me a PM and I'll see if we can do anything.

    !!I didn't see your post!!
but, I've apparently got a hold of somebody who says I'm serviceable.. Bell said yes now, and so did teksavvy. I don't know what changed, or how it works, but I'll let you know thursday if it's real. I'm getting dry cuz I don't have a landline.. Honestly though, if getting a landline from bell would help, I'm totally open if this doesn't work out!!!!!!!!!! Bell just scares me a bit cuz of the 100 gig cap.. I usualy use about 150-200 per month. :I

    thanks again guys.

    Bell has a 100GB cap?

When I bailed on them it was because they suddenly enforced a 60GB cap.
Why should I have to WORK for everything?! It's like saying I don't deserve it!

    Re: Toronto Internet Stuff.

You can get a DSL line without a phone number (although the line will still have a # for filing references) - it's called a dry loop. Whether or not you have Rogers@home would not have an impact as they do not use the same CAT3E lines that Bell does for the phone line. At least not that I've seen on the sites I've been to.

That being said, if Bell is unable to get your a DSL line you're SOL. For DSL it's them or nothing (since any reseller gets it from them); for cable it's pretty much Rogers and that's it. Although you're within the range of the CO, your area is probably filled to capacity. A CO only gets so many ports/lines, and when they're used up...they're used up. They can attempt to add; however that's a messy job and it's only done when absolutely necessary. If they said no before and yes now, most likely someone with one of their lines canceled.

FWIW, why do you hate Rogers?
