If it's a public good it should be publicly funded.
Build public support, match private donations with government funds, hope the drug is successful then sub-contract some company to produce it.
The profit motive is important, IN canada hospitals can save money by using this instead of more expensive forms of chemo, therefore they have an incentive to conduct research.
I have to go on the side of, if the scientists say don't get your hopes up, I'm not gonna get my hopes up. Small scale studies don't always transfer to up to humans, and it'd probably be a long time before they would do human trials anyhoo. So don't go blaming society just yet.
Society is money driven, we live in a capitalistic society, a lot of the things you do revolves around getting more money or acquiring new ways to get more money.
Medical research/clinical trials take a lot of time. A LOT of time. Be patient.
