Re: Steam News - Weekend Deal - Ubisoft Classic Pack

I bought it to try out the old "Far Cry"... ...and it didn't work on my Windows 7 64 bit. It turns out it's a common problem on Vista 64 bit as well, and after a bit of searching, I found the answer. From this link:

I bought Far Cry 1 last night not realizing that it was listed as working only on XP. So needless to say I was a bit worried that it wouldn't run on my Vista Home Premium 64 system, and immediately went to work to get it installed.

Three hours later and I finally have it running smoothly, but it was rough going. I figured my description of my experience may help others resolve their issues.

At first Far Cry wouldn't start at all. I immediately got an error that asked me if I wanted to close the program. Upon further examination I realized that I needed two dll files missing during the installation.

    MSVCP71.DLL
    msvcr71.dll

I found the files at the following website, "www.dll-files.com" and unzipped them and placed them in the following directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\farcry\Bin32

This resolved the start up problem and I saw the startup screen. The first time it started up though it was on that screen for like 4 minutes or so. I think it must be unpacking files or something because after this it loaded faster.

Then when I tried to start the campaign during the load screen it would just hang there. Every few seconds a message came from steam telling me the cd-key. I disabled the Steam-Community in game and this solved the problem of it hanging.

I restarted farcry on the lowest settings and it loaded quickly. I tried it with higher and higher settings until I was able to get it to run at the highest settings. Again it took along time to load, several minutes - the higher the graphics settings I used. But after loading with the new graphic setting for the first time - it loaded up much quicker the next time.

I tested the game out for about ten minutes and didn't have any problems.
Seems to work, very, very well (1024x768 all settings on high) for me.

Far Cry is a pain to get working (missing some files). But overall, the price is right.

Now I need a joystick though...

It should be ok, if you follow what I've mentioned, above. That is, if you experience the same problem, of course. A simple download, copy and paste into the proper subdirectory (no reboot required) and I'm good to go.
