afaik there's a decent chance of a neighbouring volcano erupting and throwing a climate-altering amount of ash into the air. similar events happened in iceland in the 1700s and killed about a third of icelandic population as well as temporarily lowering global temperatures (the mississippi froze as far south as louisiana for instance)
