I hate apple because I know more than "power on, open internet browser"... , so I know that paying 1500 for a mac that has the same components and performs the same as any PC worth 1100 doesn't make sense. And nobody uses the same harsh marketing techniques that apple uses. Did you forget that apple asked Microsoft to not directly compare win7 to their OS in advertisements and such? I haven't seen as many of those annoying apple ads since win7 was released....hmmmm
First off, Macs are for more than just the "power on, open internet browser" types... just take a look at the people in this forum that use Macs.
Apple asked Microsoft not to make the direct comparison because Snow Leopard is basically Leopard 1.5 while Win7 is a complete overhaul... its like comparing Beatles RockBand to Guitar Hero 5 (in the sense that B:RB features some new tweaks but is essentially the same as RB2, while GH5 is a full out sequel to GH4). A $30 "super-upgrade" of their existing OS isn't meant to be compared to a $200 new OS.
Apple's "Mac vs. PC" ads are along the same branch of ads shown in many industries: The Runner-Up attacking The Big Guy. Think of Pepsi or Chevy ads. Yes, they're full of gross oversimplifications, but the point of marketing is to best convince the viewer to purchase your product (psst, thats how marketing works). When you say "no one uses the same harsh marketing Apple uses" you should really be saying "no one uses marketing"; I certainly didn't notice Microsoft ads until they woke up and realized that they were losing customers to Apple and that Apple ads had already tainted the mainstream perception of their software. That having been said, Apple ads probably haven't been airing as much because Microsoft is hogging the airwaves with their "Look, now Windows is for stupid people too!" campaign.
I understand the whole software issue, but now that most would agree that win7 is the same if not better than snow leopard then how can they justify that extra cost, not to mention the arrogance that this CEO brings everytime he shows off a new product. "the netbook didn't do anything better!!?!?" Obviously the netbook filled a new part of the market and took full advantage of the Atom. I guess this attitude doesn't bother apple customers because they are generally the arrogant, to good for everyone else sort of people. I just hate the whole idea of the people that buy their products. Most people buy mac for the same reason they need a nice/overpriced car, "I drive a BMW, not a ford...I only use macs, PCs are inferior". Its not like I'm calling the products they make bad, just the way the company is ran is not to my liking. I believe that apple can make any product just as good if not better than any microsoft/google endorsed product, of course it will cost 30% more..
I'd wager that the reason Jobs uptalks his products to such an extent is because he is EXCELLENT (see what I did thar?) at creating excitement and buzz for his products. I hate the Mac vs. PC ads as much as anyone with half a brain does, but you can't fault a company for having the ability to get people excited and talking about their products... thats what all companies strive for and most fail to achieve.
Jobs is partially correct in his criticism of netbooks... they were intended to be a hit with the market the iPad is pitching towards (people who don't like fancy laptops) and ended up becoming a niche item for we of the nerd community who want something we can tinker with on the go. The netbook market is tiny and largely unpopular and, as far as reaching its target market is concerned, is a failed product. (I have a Dell Mini 9 and I love it, but them suckers [netbooks in general] ain't gonna be around long)
